It looked like it was going to rain today, so I decided to finish tilling the herb bed, before I was unable to do so for a few days. Once it rains good, it takes a good long while for the ground to drain. It took only about 20 minutes to finish everything off, so I got to plant a few of the perennials. Once all of those are placed, I will map out the herb bed and work on it. Progress so far
It is a little hard to tell, but there is plenty of room between these newly planted perennials, and the future gravel, for a nice number of herbs. Of course, at this angle, none of that can be seen very well. We'll just have to wait until things grow bigger.
Not quite done here. I think I will place our birdbath among these plants and add some Leucanthemum 'Becky' in the foreground. This area is next to the herb section. Mostly sunloving perennials in the 24" height range.
I also found some of the pictures that eluded me yesterday.
This is the island bed I enlarged last season. Originally, it was only about half as deep. So far things seem to be coming back as expected, the jury is still out on some things, for example I seem to be missing an entire 5 plant clump of daisies. Since they are very cold hardy and therefore should be filling in nicely even as we speak, I suspect they may have gotten too wet, as they are sitting in a little depression. I'll give it a few more weeks and then I will fill in any confirmed holes. All of the iris seem to be doing well, so far, I divided them last Spring, so of course they didn't really bloom (wrong time of year for division). I am interested to see how things look this year.
This is the shade bed on the NorthEast side of the house. Hostas, hydrangea, some zebra grass (it gets enough sun in the morning) and some other things. In the background you can see the gate to the veggie garden with the wonderful clematis arch my sweetie built for me. The bulk of the vines are sweet autumn clematis (an amazing sight when they bloom), but there are some spring flowering ones on this side of the fence.
Well, that's it for today, maybe more tomorrow or the next day...
