So there were some really nice moments in this episode - alongside the dodgy bits, of which there are many.
Gallant Tarrant is always a joy and he felt true to what I believe his character to be this week. Snarky Soolin *actually got proper plot* this week. The compassion for Nebrox reminds us who the good guys are.
I looked at the mangan and it looked rather like the wholegrain porridge I have most mornings. Which is actually yummy!
This is like the anti-Ben Steed episode with its evil female solidarity, and Soolin being the one who solves the riddle. Except at the end, you know, evil woman fails and dies. But for its era, not too shabby, I'll give it an 80s feminist 6/10.
Favourite line:-
"I expect a little suffering will make her a better artist."
I also love Den of Geek's description of faux Cancer - "the Noel Edmonds lookalike skulking around looking like a shifty bat"
And so to the confusing and bad.
I'm pretending the slave market did not happen, lah lah lah not listening.
Why is Servalan spending so much effort tracking them down? So far they have recruited exactly zero LIVE scientists. This is a very time consuming resource hungry plot which, of course, does not work. I think I might be putting my efforts elsewhere by now.
Cancer - a wee mechanical poison crab? Clearly at this point the writers regret calling the ship "Scorpio", as a scorpion would be a better choice.
Cancer stopping to dress in sequins before delivering the evil villain monologue = no. Just no, not professional. Also the sign of a weak script when it has to be explained at the end.
I do like Servalan's simple black dress at the end. Nice to see her looking semi normal. It lets her acting show through better.
Clearly at this point the writers regret calling the ship "Scorpio" Yes, I wondered about that too - maybe the script was originally written for S3, when they still had the Liberator, and then had to be adapted. It would make a lot more sense if the assassin had been called Scorpio! (Crabs are not really *that* intimidating creatures...)
Why is Servalan spending so much effort tracking them down? Someone, I think it was during the last rewatch, made the interesting suggestion that Servalan's motives for pursuing them in S4 may be essentially personal: after her loss of power and her need to remain incognito, the old Liberator crew may very well be the only people left to who know who she is and treat her like her old self. Or at least the only ones that she can still allow herself to interact with. She may have a subconscious craving for that little bit of recognition, causing her to keep searching them out.
I rather like that interpretation. It would add a bit of depth to her otherwise sadly caricature figure in S4.
