Phear teh leverage!

In other news. I actually had a good day at work today.

Mainly due to the younger, less experienced, better paid, opinionated programmer i work alongside being shown up by his apparent lack of business sense and knowledge of working in the industry. He was straight out of Leeds University 2 years ago, and worked for a company in Leeds that we subsequently bought. Because he was on a higher wage up there in Leeds he got the same when he moved down to where we are in Misterton, or he'd have left. So it pleases me when his usual cocky attitude is brought back down to a boyish pubescent school leaver.

However him being paid more actually works to my advantage. Because, at the moment, he wants a pay rise. As well as i do. He's looking at buying a new house, because he's renting after moving out of his parents house in Leeds, and cant quite afford to buy what he wants. I do a similar job to him, but on a much larger scale. I'm more experienced, having 5 and a half years working in this industry, and i have a greater degree of knowledge about our system and the way systems work in the 'real' world. I also have a lot more responsibilities than him. I'm a helluva lot more mature and level headed than he is too. He tends to be a bit brash and tries to stick his oar in wherever he can, to get his incredibly important (and 100% accurate of course) opinion known by everyone. Startling the 3 years difference between us makes in the real world.

How does this benefit me might you ask? he's being paid more for doing less of a job i hear you cry! Thats true. But. We're both due our annual review before the end of the month, which includes a pay review. If he's going to get a pay rise, i want him to get it before i have my review. Reason being a little thing called the Equal Pay act of like 1970 or something. The act was originally established to make sure people of different genders, ages and ethnicity are paid equally for doing the same or similar job. I'm sure you've figured this out already but, whatever he gets paid, i am entitled to be paid the same, If not MORE. Which is excellent seeing as i'm pretty sure he's already on at least 3-4k more a year than i am. If he gets a pay rise to 20k+ a year, and i don't. Bring on the tribunal baby!

They actually cant afford to lose me until around July-August time next year either, otherwise the company will have no-one to support the old system while the £4m new system is implimented. All hail the holy £4m leverage!

I cant wait to hit them with my 20-23k salary request/demands. A £4-7,200 a year (or £200-350 a month after tax!) increase on my current salary :D Then watch them squirm, as they realise they're gonna have to give me a pay rise regardless. It's just a matter of how much!

Another enjoyable event, that happens every 6 months, occured today too. That event being what we call an 'Open Forum' Which is basically a number of small meetings where employees get to sit in a room with the MD and grill him about things that affect us at work, things we don't like, things we would like to change or know more about etc. And it's always interesting to see what comes up from other peoples experiences. Being in the role i'm in, and the length of time i've been at the company, i see things from a very business-like point of view, so i can relate to the answers given by our MD. I like how i understand the way things work better than most people there, it gives me a sense of great satisfaction. I almost have to hold myself back from answering the questions posed to our MD for him lol.

So all in all, today was good. Meeting tomorrow with important people about the first stage of the £4m system implimentation. Should be good.
