January classes and events at Artisan's Asylum

Dec 21, 2010 10:41

Artisan's Asylum is happy to announce that January class registrations are open. This month, we have a mixture of our usual introductory classes, some advanced classes that build on our introductory classes, and a number of project classes that will let you take home really cool stuff (including a working pneumatic engine, a kilt, custom wood sculpture, T-shirts printed with your own designs, or even an ocean kayak!).

In addition to the classes listed below, we also have Artisan's Asylum gift certificates that make for awesome presents. Registration for January membership is also now open, if you just want to come in and use the shop spaces for your own projects! We want you to join our group of over 50 members as we build a hub of technology, art and manufacturing in Somerville.

Without further ado, here are our January classes!

Metalworking:
+ Introduction to TIG Welding, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. One of our most popular courses returns! Come learn how to weld with Skunk. TIG welding is a precise type of welding generally used to make space frames and small pieces.
+ Advanced TIG Welding: Aluminum. Take your TIG welding to the next level by learning all of the intricacies about welding aluminum!
+ Precision Metal Machining. Get an introduction to milling machines and lathes and learn how to make your own precise metal parts.
+ Precision Machining: Building an Engine. Use your precision machining skills (either from previous experience, previous Asylum classes, or taking our current machining class) to make a small, air-powered "Lucy" engine.

Electronics:
+ Introduction to Electronics. An electronics class geared towards getting complete newcomers into working on their own hobby electronics projects in no time flat.

Fabric Arts:
+ Introduction to Sewing. Come learn how your sewing machine works and how to use it to create basic stitches. NOTE: This class has moved to Sunday evenings.
+ Sewing II: Sewing From A Pattern. Take your sewing to the next level! This extension of our Introduction to Sewing class will teach students how to make themselves new clothing from patterns.
+ Four-Color Silkscreening. Learn all of the steps of the silkscreening process in this intensive, 2-month course. Students will create a 1-color silkscreen and a 4-color silkscreen on professional equipment.
+ Kilt Making. Yes, you heard us right. Come learn how to make your own kilts from scratch, in preparation for Robert Burns Day!

Woodworking:
+ Building the Asylum (Intro to Woodworking). Our Intro to Woodworking class returns! Come learn how to use the woodworking shop by making workbenches and other infrastructure for the Asylum.
+ Sculptural Woodworking. Learn how to think of wood and wood crafting tools as an artistic, sculptural medium. Take home your own wooden sculpture at the end!
+ Building a Kayak. No, we're not kidding. Come build a skin-on-frame, custom-fit, 17 foot long open-ocean kayak with us.
+ Introduction to Computer-Aided Machining (CAM). Artisan's Asylum has a computer-controlled router now! It can handle 4 foot by 8 foot sheets, and cut computer-generated forms in a matter of hours. Come learn the basics of both computer-aided manufacturing and, specifically, creating programs for our Blackfoot router,

Food:
+ Cooking Essentials: Spice and Oils: A one-session introduction to various oils and spices, discussing their uses, misuses, and the effects they have on various foods.
+ Robert Burns Supper: A Taste of Scotland: For over 200 years, the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns has been celebrated with a commemorative dinner, recitation of poetry, traditional foods, and other fun. The Asylum will be hosting our own night, full of catered food, kilts, and hilarity.
