Do people hang out in the store and play Magic outside of the events/tournaments pretty often? I've only seen people playing D&D in the few times I've been there.

Harrison's Comics in Salem, MA on Saturdays I believe. They also have pre-release and release tournaments at UMASS-Boston I believe. If you go the the Wizards site they have info on them.

No seriously, my hubbers just taught myself and a few of our friends how to play, and we're all *just* starting out. We like to play more to have fun than to win-- and we brew our own beer.

We're trying to get a regular magic night started on wednesdays.

Dead srs. Interested? (we live in JP, by forest hills)

Playing with other nerds is the most fun and easy way to learn, but if you want an additional experience and you have an XBOX 360 there is a downloadable game called Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers. It is pretty basic(no deck customization), but a decent substitute.
