Just completed chapters 2 and 3 for my CADC course in Pharmacology.
Only 3 chapters to go!
I'll admit, I'm a bit behind - but thats primarily due to being sidetracked by a potential job in high tech earlier this week. We'll see how that goes.
Chapter 2 - Cocaine
Chapter 3 - Hallucinogens and Dissociative Drugs
I started by downloading Eric Claptons classic "cocaine" to start my studying. My great takeaway is that Cocaine is a Dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It also affects the ventral tegmental area of the brain, which is associated with our reward system.
That done it was on to Hallucinogens and Dissociative Drugs. Sure, I knew enough about LSD and Psilocybin, but really didn't know as much about PCP, Special K and Robo or DXM (aka dextromethorphan or extra strengh cough suppressant).
First LSD - affects the Cerebral Cortex and locus ceruleus (a sensory signal center) - more interestingly it affects the serotonin receptors, specifically the 5-HT2 receptors.
Next PCP - originally an intravenous surgical anesthetic. From my materials "PCP disrupts the functioning of sites known as NMDA N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor complexes, which are receptors for the neurotransmitter glutamate." Glutamates are involved in perception of pain as well as affecting learning and memory.
Special K is PCP light and has been used as a date rape drug.
dextromethorphan, an ingredient in cough suppressant has a dissociative effect and can be abused in high enough dosages. I have an MC Chris song in my library that is about a "Tussin" high.
Enough fun for now, Its time to go be social :)
