A little anxious...

My aunt is back in the hospital. This time she was whisked to a big ivy-league teaching hospital 2 hours away. She had emergency brain surgery this morning.

I guess she fell sometime last week and hit her head. A few days after that, she got a headache. Over the next few days, it got worse, coming in waves. Saturday night she went to the hospital in Keene and they decided that this was a job for Dartmouth-Hitchcock up in Lebanon. I was encouraged by the fact that they took her up in an ambulance instead of air-lifting her, but my mom (who was chasing the ambulance) said that they were getting faster and faster. She finally gave up and dropped back when she realized that she was going 90 and they were pulling away.

Before heading up again to be with her sister for the surgery, my mom highlighted a section of an article in Neurology Now and left it out where we could all see it:

"Doctors described the injury as a subdural hematoma, which is a fancy way of saying 'blood on the brain.' This was very bad news, because blood is toxic to the brain. The very stuff so essential to life also kills brain cells."

I haven't heard anything since "she's getting surgery," but once I do, I'll comment what I hear.
