AIM Virus Info
Okay, this is a new virus I haven't seen before. Just as a primer, I'll start you off with some info. I am writing this myself, Steve, as a computer instructor.
Q: What is an AIM Virus?
A: An AIM virus is a program that will send itself to EVERYONE in your AIM list, usually. It will usually pass itself off as a harmless message, asking you to click a link for a movie or some other thing like a survey. Once you click it, it either leads you to a link to download the virus, or it is the virus itself.
Q: How do I avoid them?
A: DON'T click on any links someone sends you on AIM until you ask them if they sent it first. Also, NEVER open or run a file that ends in .EXE, .PIF, or .SCR unless you are sure of what you are doing.
Q: What if I get one?
A: TELL your AIM friends about it, so they won't click on it. Or if they already have they will know so they can remove the virus. You can try anti-virus software to remove it.
This particular virus is evil. It runs itself as a file called "comrepl32.exe" If you stop it from running in Task Manager, ANOTHER ONE will pop up. I tried deleting the comrepl32.exe files but they still keep re-appearing! This virus may name itself different file names as well.
The sad thing is I had a friend on AIM who had the virus. I tried to tell her, hey, you have an AIM virus, you just sent me a virus link. And she was like, "No I didn't! How dare you accuse me!" and I was like, um, no you don't understand I know you didn't do it on purpose but I thought you should know you have a virus. Then she said, "Well! That was very rude!" And I'm thinking, hey, I'm trying to TELL you you have a VIRUS, how is that rude?! I'm helping you. So ANYWAY she just kept being mad so I blocked her oh well.
I'll update you if I actually figure out how to get rid of the damned thing. For now, if an AIM friend sends you a link, especially out of the blue, DON'T CLICK IT.
(Yes, I know I shouldn't have... I wasn't paying attention. The file came up as a PIF and my brain said NO! but my finger already clicked "Open." UGH.)
