a holy life still waits for me.

I felt bad about doing a short mix for Sam and not Dean, and I had a bunch of songs left over from the last Dean mix I did, so wah-la! Another Dean mix. He's so spoiled, seriously.

MIX SUMMARY: Life, death, Heaven, Hell, salvation, damnation; resurrection, Purgatory. I have this feeling like Dean just doesn't get to die for real.

(...This might have Dean/Castiel overtones at points? Maybe. I think I'm choosing to interpret the angel references as having more to do with Dean's faith/lack thereof/supremely fucked up relationship with the celestial. Or something. I don't wanna do a D/C mix! I don't wanna!)

Always Here

01. "The Once and Future Carpenter" - The Avett Brothers

and my life is but a coin, pulled from an empty pocket
dropped into a slot with dreams of sevens close behind
and hope and fear go with it, and moon and the sun go spinning
like the numbers and fruits before my eyes
sometimes i hit, sometimes it robs me blind
sometimes i hit, sometimes it robs me blind

forever i will move like the world that turns beneath me
and when i lose my direction i'll look up to the sky
and when the black cloak drags upon the ground
i'll be ready to surrender, and remember
well we're all in this together
if i live the life i'm given, i won't be scared to die

02. "The Funeral" - Band of Horses

i'm coming up only to hold you under
i'm coming up only to show you wrong
and to know you is hard we wonder
to know you all wrong we were

really too late to call
so we wait for morning to wake you
that's all we got
to know me as hardly golden
is to know me all wrong, they were

at every occasion i'll be ready for the funeral
every occasion, once more, it's called the funeral
every occasion, know i'm ready for the funeral
at every occasion, oh, one billion day funeral

03. "Wretched Man" - Marcus Mumford

the things i don't want to do, i just keep doing
the things i want to do, i can't do
what a wretched man i am becoming
what a wretched man i have become

who will save me?
from this body of death that is looming
from this funeral harlor i keep on seeing
in the corner of my eye while pointing my gun
in the corner of my mind while ignoring the sun
it's coming for me, it's coming for me

what you asked just cannot be done
this mindless heart is what i've become
this weight on my back is just too heavy
the holy life just wasn't for me

04. "Old Number 7" - The Devil Makes Three

i guess i grew up on an old dirt road
pedal to the metal always did what i was told
'til i found out that my brand new clothes
came second hand from the rich kids next door
when i grew up fast i guess i grew up mean
there's a thousand things inside my head i wish i ain't seen
and now i just wandered through a real bad dream
feelin' like i'm coming apart at the seems

thank you jack daniels old number seven
tennessee whiskey got me drinking in heaven
angels start to look good to me
they're gonna have to deport me to the fiery deep

05. "In The Branches" - The Builders and the Butchers

they left the angels singing
in the branches of a burning tree
said it was all a game
and your daddy got bent and twisted
in the bed that he made
you'll end up the same

you went down, down, down
you went down, down, down in the sugar and the corn
you're goin' down, down, down
you're goin' down, down, down where the fire is born

06. "New Cannonball Blues" - TV on the Radio

hey girls, hey boys, no don't mind the noise
it's just the sound of being dragged to hell
it's just a pornographic adulationship
as we watch the spider's web eat itself

all this death and birth extinguishing
all that you've ever known
turn your touchscreen off and start harvesting
the seeds that your parents sowed

it's got me singin' blues that hit you
like a cannonball loud enough to break your bones
but it was written in blood before they wrote it in stone
so sing it with me like it's your own

07. "Failing the Rorschach Test" - Matthew Good Band

mother told me to be something
so i'm afraid enough to stay wide awake
so wide awake, wide awake

this ain't real baby
this ain't real baby
i've got a better excuse for myself

i'm always here
i'm always here
i'm always here
