it's a fortress now but you know how it used to be.

1. I have a hacking death plague (AKA: the flu), so instead of attending one of the various and several New Year's Eve parties to which I was invited this year (a new occurance! I attribute it to both being a delightful human being and also more evidence that nobody liked my ex, lol), I am at home with a three-pack of single-serving Freixenet, hair dye, and Chinese food. One of these things is slathered on my head, and I'm not saying which.

(I got a haircut today. The stylist was amazing, and when I get used to it, I will adore the cut. It is exactly what I wanted, but it's still scary and awfully non-normative.)

2. I keep going to the AO3 to find and read the sweet, embittered QI futurefic where contracts get broken and country cottages get lived in and a lot of books get read/written and there are a lot of silly jokes and a lot of empty rooms/stilted non-conversations/moody English silences, but then I remember it doesn't exist (mostly because I've been writing it in my head and the network connection to my writing apparatus seems to be down).

3. I left off a bunch of things in my catching up post!

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Just friggin delightful. And the fanservice is also friggin delightful--because it's in-jokey and loving, not mocking or mean-spirited (hallo SPN). It's like, "Oh! You think Holmes and Watson should wrestle in a train carriage? Yeah! Watson rips Holmes's shirt off? Yes! Why not! That sounds entertaining!" And RDJ is like, "Holmes should be in drag. Just saying."

(Seriously. I think I read the fic of that scene about a year ago.)

(Stephen Fry. Your belly + me = mfeo. Call me.)

The West Wing - Epic Unnecessary Re-Watch continues. I just started s5. I think the last episode I saw first-run was "The California 47th." So. You know. A lot of things changed immediately after that and I'm sort of O.o ... o.O a bit.

(Kidnapping. Really.)

(Will Bailey. Will Bailey. I forgot that I loved you the moment I saw you, and that Sam loved you the moment he saw you hanging out on a beach in a suit.)

Dexter - I decided to give s6 a shot after a few people said it wasn't terrible or nearly as full of coercion/rape as s5. I'm up to the ninth episode and I just keep thinking--what a waste of Edward James Olmos. The first few episodes were great, but I'm annoyed all over again. Though, you know, Deb. Is amazing. Etc. Sigh, sigh. Conflictful show is full of conflict.

Bob & Rose - This is the show Alan Davies did pretty well directly before QI; it's about a gay man and a straight woman who fall in love. I watched it when it was on here--I think a year after it premiered in the UK? Anyway. I was delighted to find a working torrent of all six episodes, and I'm quite enjoying it (attendant Russell T. Daviesness aside; ugh ugh ugh misogyny and biphobia and heteronormativity ugh ugh gross). What's interesting is that this is my reference for Alan Davies--I'd never even heard of Jonathan Creek before I started watching QI this past spring, but I enjoyed Bob & Rose ten years ago, and when I first saw QI, I was like, "I know that dude! Where do I know him from! Dammit!" Yes. Obviously when I said "interesting" I was completely wrong, but still. It's weird for me to be reading UK-based fan tumblrs and stuff and they're all making Jonathan Creek references and stuff, and I'm like, "Buh?" Usually, among fans, I'm the one who doesn't know the obscure back catalogue.

(I actually spent several hours the other day loading and watching two of his stand-up shows from the 90s. I know. Actually, no, I don't know. I do not even know. I don't get a lot of internet these days, and I spent a whole bunch of it on that. He's pretty funny, peeps. I'd recommend "Live at the Lyric" [1994] over "Urban Trauma" [1998]. In case you were wondering.)

I need a QI icon. Or a couple.

And soon, soon, soon, the new series of Sherlock. SO LOOKING FORWARD. CANNOT ACTUALLY WAIT.

4. I got the ingredients for pasta shells stuffed with spinach and ricotta, and I am going to eat the hell out of that tomorrow. I also got fresh Brussels sprouts for roasting; people on the Facebook have been talking about their favourite ways of preparing Brussels sprouts and I couldn't stand it anymore. I might separate some out to toss with Cheez Whiz, though. I can't help it if I'm from the suburbs, okay.

5. Dear 2012: I love you already. Please be good to everyone. Hugs!
