I started the new semester last month, been so busy. I'm excited about starting a research project. I think I want to write on the origins of Islamofascism. Why is Islam merged with Fascism? It doesn't make sense. Next week, I'll go to a proposal writing workshop. Meanwhile, I'm going to see if I can find a mentor to guide me with my research. It'll be for 10 weeks over the summer. I'll get paid for it too, that is if I get the grant. My advisor tells me that Juniors get priority, but hey, I'm eligible to apply, so I'm applying. Even if I don't get it, I'd still like to learn more about Islamofascism. The word was first used in 1978. I got that fact off wikipedia. There are so many subtopics I could write about. How do I restrict it? I'm not sure yet, it is such a broad subject. But I don't think a lot of research has been done on it. People like Christopher Hitchens acknowledge its existence, but few people actually use the term.
I'm working on study questions for my class in social and political philosophy. We're learning about utilitarianism. I agree with some of it, but I also find it a bit extreme and idealistic. But then, you could probably call a lot of philosophy extreme or idealistic. One of the things I don't like about it is that it doesn't leave room for people to go after their own interests(at least for ideal utilitarianism). You must do everything to promote utility and happiness. If that means not paying special attention to who you love or what you love, then that's how it's got to be.
Temperatures outside are brrr...freezing!!! Thankfully Mr. Groundhog didn't see his shadow, so we'll have an early spring. I'm really looking forward to it. How about you?
How are you doing?
