It's been a crazy busy last couple of weeks. The roof got done, but the re-fit to the back room was decided against. Last weekend my sister and I decided to go to the Pirate & Mermaid Festival in Long Beach. zdude and I and Honey went to West/An Tir War in Oregon.
I'm still a little upset that nothing was done to the back room, hopefully redoing the roof will fix whatever was causing the leaks. The floor should still be done sometime, but that will have to wait til Manny get around to it. We're putting stuff back in the back room storage area and separating out things we no longer want or need (continuing the great house purge). Saru and Nan are trying to sell off things via yard sale and craigslist. Anything that doesn't sell, Saru will take to donate. He's gotten very involved with Western Farm Workers, I'm not quite sure how or why, but he seems very happy with his work.
Addell and I left on June 27th in my car for Long Beach. We stayed at a Vagabond Inn that wasn't all that bad. All Saturday we spent at the
Belmont Pier at the festival. It was very cool, a friend of mine happened to have a green wig and This was the first year they added the mermaids in and they weren't very prepared. The booths for mermaid stuff was up behind the pool building and, while they had some Olympic(ish) events like swim races, it only lasted 10 minutes or so then the public could put on their tails and swim. The mermaids took one big pic on the beach (which we missed) and it was posted on Facebook. The pirate camp was all along the beach and the pier was taken up by booths selling all things Pirate. There were cannon and gun fights between the shore and three pirate ships. Very cool. Addell and I wandered about halfway down the pier before we just got too tired and hungry.
We planned on coming back and doing the last half after lunch but we were already burnt so we went back to the hotel. One of my friends had posted that there was a
great Crepe place downtown so we decided to check it out for dinner. It took a few times of roaming up and down the street, and asking a valet, but we found out that the place had closed three months ago. =( We ended up across the street at
King's Fish House. Wow! Wonderful place, such good food! We sat and ate and laughed and had a grand time. We also reluctantly decided not to go back for the second day of the festival, as we were sunburnt and tired and out of money. The pack up and ride out the next morning was unhurried and calm.
I took off Monday (the 30th), but I probably didn't have to. zdude didn't take off work or his class, so all I had to worry about was packing up my car and getting up to his house. We had told Honey she couldn't go unless she came up with the money herself (entry and meals). zdude had only budgeted for the two of us and had no extra this late in the program. She did manage to come up with just enough for entry and travel food. Another SCA person said she would feed Honey in exchange for help with things during the event.
We all had a blast! It was a wonderful event, very laid back. Honey immediately made two friends and the King's daughter (who she has become BFFs with) showed up Thursday. They all spent time swimming in the creek on the property and running around between chores. Saturday was fencing on the beach and Honey, her friends, and I all hitched a ride to go down and swim in the (cold!!) ocean. Honey got badly sunburned, I got a little burnt. The ocean and the area was beautiful and I never wanted to leave. I would be so happy if I could move to Oregon and stay there the rest of my life. zdude and I talked about going to the War again next year and I figured, since Saru will be moving up there anyway, we can make that the target date. We'll take him and his stuff up there and get him settled and then pop on over to the coast. It will be great, but we may have to bring Fish with us (He stayed home this time with Nan and Saru).
Monday (the 7th) was just sit and rest day at zude's and then home by 10pm. It was a almost a let-down to come to work this morning, but something's got to fund my retirement, right?
