On Tuesday my sister came down with flu symptoms. She stayed home on Wednesday, but like the selfish moron that she often is, she went to school on Thursday even after my parents told her not to. Apparently her social life was more important than halting the spread of infectious diseases. By Friday she was really sick and my parents decided to take her to the doctor. I was beginning to show some very mild flu-like symptoms, so I asked them to call me if they found out she had H1N1. I was about a quarter of the way through my shift and starting to feel really sick when then called and left a voice mail saying she had it. They haven't done the blood test confirming it, but they did a sinus swab that confirmed she had influenza, and the only strain of influenza currently in our state is H1N1. So I talked to management and the moment I said the words "swine flu" they were all on board with sending me home.
Last week the outbreak of H1N1 at Washington Sate University made national news when more than 2,500 students were diagnosed with H1N1. It essentially shut down the whole school. Well, Washington State University is less than 30 miles from where I live, and the virus has definitely spread to our town now. I don't know what the situation on campus is, but I know that when I left work Friday quite a few people were coming down with symptoms of the flu. I talked to James yesterday and about half their staff at Applebees is out with it, including one cook who is coughing up blood.
I guess I'm pretty lucky compared to most people getting it. I have very, very mild symptoms and since I haven't had a fever in 24 hours, I should be able to go back to class on Monday. I'm just staying home and resting as a precaution because I don't know how contagious I still am. I could probably still function well enough to work otherwise. The worst part about this flu is mostly just the body aches, headaches, and fatigue. The sore throat and congestion aren't even that bad.
I'm pissed that I"m missing work though. I made the decision to quit, but I wanted to get all the money I could in the next couple of weeks. Thanks to H1N1, I'm only going to be working 8 hours this week. Fortunately, either there was some sort of massive mistake on this weeks paycheck, or it's going to include a bonus check of some sort. I just looked up my online paystub, which tells my how much my check will be on Thursday but none of the details. The check amount is about twice what I was expecting, so I'm thinking it has some Holiday pay and bonus check included. That should make up for all this work I'm missing.
