I've started a new tradition: Every Halloween I watch Practical Magic and every Christmas I watch Love Actually. Because I'm a big fat sucker for movies like that. I wouldn't call them chick flicks exactly, cause I think they're better than the average J.Lo love adventure, but I have to admit they are girly feel good flicks. Whatever.
This post isn't really about either of those movies but about their soundtracks. Love Actually was the first time I'd ever heard of Joni Mitchell- I know, I know, I grew up under a rock- and because of that I recognized her name when I was digging through a box of tapes at Tower Records and was prompted to buy what is now my absolute favorite tape of all time: Miles of Aisles. I can listen to it over and over all day long. And Practical Magic has my all time favorite song from that tape, A Case of You, and another wonderful song by Stevie Nicks, Crystal. Both songs reach out and strike a chord in me. They carve a hole into my chest and fill it up with longing for I don't even know what. They make me want to cry and to create. To reach out in restlessness to someone or something that I should be.
I've provided links to both for your listening pleasure:
