I woke up this morning to the wail of a guitar- my older sister Angela’s ring tone. It was 7am, so 4am Vegas time. She’d worked a night shift and then gone out with some coworkers so she was just getting in. She said she wanted to end a good day by talking to me- which was a great way for me to start the day I told her through a yawn. We talked for about an hour about everything from our parent’s sometimes rocky relationship, to her and her boyfriend Mark’s efforts to quit smoking together (different substances), to her trouble getting over her friend Melinda’s death and her fears of getting too close to people since then. Then we talked a bit about graduation plans- she’s gonna come visit for a week and I thought to myself- wow, I have to find things to do with her. It’s an odd role reversal cause she’s always been the cool older sister, I always go visit her. So now I have to show her what my life is like. I’m not really sure what to do with her- she’s picky about who and what she likes. I’m thinking maybe hiking around Great Falls, convincing Jesse to take us to the pottery lab at Wakefield, the sketchy hookah bars in skyline mall, Moroccan food, napping on the National Mall, moseying around Old Town, maybe a concert if anyone good’s coming. Any other suggestions would be welcome. I want her to meet all my friends but at the same time I wonder if she’ll have problems connecting- she’s older and she’s lived such a different life than all of us. She went straight to culinary school after college and by the time she was 20 she’d driven herself down to Florida to live, by 22 she drove across the country to Vegas. The girl’s got balls.
Around 8 I went back to bed and the rest of the day was pretty tranquilo. I met with the director of student activities and the SHH president to plan the Walkathon in April, went to class, and then walked downtown to this bookshop and cafe l like called the Griffin. It always feels like walking into someone’s living room. I’m actually doing an ethnography project about the place, but I like to just go and do work and sip at a mug of tea and listen to everyone chatter away. My friend Lauren met me there and drove me back to school- I had to be at work by 4. I played a mix tape Angela gave me a couple years back and called up the dentist to arrange an appointment to get my wisdom teeth taken out- Peace Corps’ orders. And then I went over to the CCC for dinner- it’s this religious group on campus that I’ve gotten to know because they went to Honduras at the same time as me. It’s the first voluntary religious thing I’ve gone to in ages and I think I go more for the people than the “fellowship”. But they do have interesting discussions and they never push religion on anyone, so it’s nice. Today we talked about genocide and the concept of the other with our human rights professor. I asked him if Jesus would be in favor of gay marriage since he was friends with other people that typically were considered immoral and he said he wasn’t sure about marriage but that definitely they should ordain gay priests, that gays should have all the legal rights, etc. That Jesus would have had gay friends. Now I’m back in the room and lazy and in the mood to do massive lj updates or watch movies instead of doing anything productive like work on my thesis, which is haunting me.
Marisa’s going to come visit me tomorrow night, which should be really great. And pretty soon Hindi dance practice will start up again- I’ve missed that so much. Mmmm, that’s it for now. But I do have a lot more to catch you all up on, so keep your eyes peeled. Peace!
