This is an amazing story. I just had to tell it.
Evening of December 3: Trent Reznor posts an update on nin.com saying that due to funding/timing issues, no DVD will be issued for the 2008 Lights in the Sky tour. Trent also hints that NIN is unlikely to tour on this scale ever again. Mass depression/pandemonium follows. We've been anticipating the DVD since the tour started, every last one of us. A show this phenomenal must be documented for posterity.
Within 24 hours, there are 1000+ comments to Trent's post. A group of fans, many of them professional film/video people, has also banded together to film their own DVD at the Vegas show on Dec. 13. 10 separate people, many with HD cameras, pledge to film from various sections in the theatre, both far back and close up. Additional people all over the country offer free professional video/audio editing help. No one is planning to profit from this effort; the DVD will be by the fans, for the fans. Since the band isn't going to put out a DVD anyway, money is not going to be diverted from the band.
Here's the kicker: On the evening of December 4, Trent hints that camera/camcorder restrictions at the Victoria, BC show on Dec. 5 will be "relaxed." (wink, wink)
Setting aside any potential legal concerns, I am astonished by the pure dedication of NIN fans, and the response by the band. It restores my faith in humanity. If any of you on the West Coast are able to attend one of the remaining shows this week, for the love of God, GO. You have to see this, and why people are so up in arms about having a DVD archive. There are things happening in this light show that I have never seen before. It kicks the a** of all other shows. The end.
