Single motherhood

Since Chris is visiting his parents, I am a single parent to Jaz this week. On the plus side, it means that I can't work any overtime at work until Chris gets back, because I can't make the dog wait too long to go for his evening walk. On the minus side, I'm going to have to do some juggling on Tuesday when I have physics lab, since I usually leave work early and go straight to class, which starts at 5:30. I'll probably just leave a little earlier than usual and come home to walk the dog before class.

I also got to be the sole dog wrangler at our vet appointment this morning. Everything looked great, but as part of the senior pet program at our vet's, Jaz gets blood and urine tests (yes, really) at every appointment. If you're wondering how a dog gives a urine sample, it's the same as how a human gives one. In our case, we walk Jaz around outside the vet's office until he decides to pee on a tree, and then the vet tech catches the stream with a plastic tray. It worked all right in August, the last time we took him, but today Jaz was a lot more skittish - probably because he didn't have both me and Chris with him. So today when we were trying to get his sample, he never took his eye off the vet tech. Every time Jaz started to lift his leg on a tree, the vet tech would take a step forward to try to get under him with the tray, and Jaz would immediately jump away and stand there rolling his eyes at us like a scared horse. After a few tries, it was pretty apparent that the vet tech wasn't going to get his sample. So guess who got to take the sample? That's right. They sent us home with a collection cup, and I collected the sample on an afternoon walk, then drove it back to the vet's. I cannot believe I collected a urine sample from a dog. When I told Chris about it this afternoon on the phone, he said, "That's hardcore." Yes, it is. But at least it was easy and not messy. Good thing he's a boy dog. I imagine it might have been more difficult with a girl dog.

Currently the little guy is stretched out next to me on the couch with his head on a pillow. Apparently he's gotten over the trauma of the vet visit just fine.
