Must get back into the habit of posting...
Good things that have been happening:
1. Joined band. Band is fun. We do not take ourselves seriously and have no grand schemes to take over the music world and this feels more free than any other band I have ever been in. Yes it has only been 3 weeks and I really don't know my band mates well yet (one maybe have just joined today - a Thai jazz pianist) but it just feels pure and I hope it stays that way.
2. Got another two classes to teach (9 more hours of paid teaching) which is good. They are day classes and the students are in a completely different place in their lives than the weekend students and make for much easier teaching which is exciting to me and made for a banner day today.
3. Caught up with an OLD online buddy on AIM chat today and we are finally in a position to try and set up a time to finally meet in person which is exciting to me. He's a great guy and I am sure his wife is just as great and this could mean knowing two more people here in Chicago which is always a very good thing.
4. I will finally actually meet up with Sara W. who is a girl I have only hung out with on my occasional visits to the city over the pat 5 years and every time we meet we shower each other with our mutual like so it will be nice to finally see her and raise a Maudite to her at Hopleaf on Thursday.
5. With all my polish students and polish food I've been eating I am having a weird kind of reconnection with the memory of my gramma (who was polish on both sides of her family we believe). I see her facial features in some of my students as well as her deliberate humor. I eat the food she used to make me and smell those strange spiced smells and I drive past a street with her name on it (LaVerne) each day i go to work. I didn't want to accept all of this until I knew I wouldn't be sad, but now that I know it just makes me feel like I'm home - well, now I am letting the feeling wash all over me. I am not FROM Chicago, but my family has so much history here and the more of this city I see the more stories from my gramma I start remembering. I feel like I'm right where I am supposed to be. Like I'm with here again. Even though all my family is so far away and I miss them so much it hurts to think about them at times - she's right here with me. It's so good to finally realize that.
6. I found an amazing Lao Cuisine place just up my block that is SO delicious and SO reasonable (huge bowl of soup $5.99).
