i'm not sure i've met you since you were a babe in arms, but i just browsed here from trizia's LJ and i just wanted to say that on the indication of this, you seem to have grown into an impressive human being. i'm currently trying to get ideas together for a book with the working title shut up and listen: the decline and fall of the other fellow's point of view, and i suspect that you're a person it could be both useful and enjoyable to hammer things out with.
Oh, hi there! I don't really remember you, but you've been mentioned, so it's nice to see you =) Thanks for the kind words, too. I'd like to talk to you about your book, if I can help I'll do what I can.
I've been wondering about this for a while and am I right in understanding that you're actually calling for borders to come down? If so, I can see where you are coming from, as I once shared your point of view, I have subsequently changed my mind on the issue.
I would very much like to you take you on on this point, but I want to make sure I understand what you are saying.
So, are you proposing that a person should be able to hop from country to country, these countries still being under different governance?
-or-
Are you saying that relocation to another country should be granted to anybody who feels the desire to do so, but they would have to subject to some kind of screening process?
-or-
Are you calling for the unification of all countries, thus rendering al borders absolute?
I might be misunderstanding entirely, so if you can just give me a rough idea of what you’re actually suggesting...
PS: You mentioned South-Africa in your initial paragraph, may I ask why South-Africa in particular?
The long-term objective is for borders to come down, and for the world to live under the same governing body. This necessarily involves a great risk of authoritarianism, which is why as much as I would like to, I don't advocate it right off the bat. However, over time, as the world becomes smaller and various poorer nations are brought up to wealthier levels, and as information becomes more freely available to more people, I believe it will one day not only be possible but inevitable. The advances we will almost certainly see in various technologies over the next two to five decades will make it possible for Humans to live without even having a biological form. I don't see how borders will be enforceable within what will be, essentially, an internet as immersive as The Matrix. Chatrooms will become places where you can interact with people in a manner identical to "the real world" (Which will become a fairly meaningless term by the middle of the century
( ... )
Well, I don't really disagree with what you're saying there - but I don't consider welfare (Except for under-18s) to be right/just/etc. Ideally, there would be no chance for someone to emigrate and abuse the system, because there would be no system to abuse.
As an aside, I would point out that in Britain at least, there are many, many people who have emigrated here who would very much like to work, but are prevented from doing so by various immigration laws.
