Drrty South

It's hardly any wonder that I enjoy backpacking and hiking as much as I do, though as Billy Clyde Puckett would say in Semi-tough, "Can't get so far away that you can't get the scores." Even still, I do like seeing the outdoors, and even when it isn't exactly wonderful nature, like in Northwestern Louisiana, it's still kind of nice to walk.

I know it sounds very lame, but with all of the Ruston Holiday Inn's excercise equipment busted, any sort of activity for me today became walking to the Wal-Mart and back, about a mile and a half.

On the way though, it was one of those damp, gray Seattle kind of days that I miss so much, I was crunching the grass beneath my feet, getting some dirt on the shoes, putting some quick acceleration into runs to get over the freeway overpasses, and clearing the head with a quick jaunt in the cool air. Just a quick respite for my mind and soul from the constant driving pressure and movement of the SID world, what with its trips to Chili's and Olive Garden, along with plane rides and 8-12 shooting for 27 points.

I'll admit, I cheated though. If you're in the woods, you can get away with soaking in the quiet. On the streets of the bayou, you have to bring along the iPod, giving you Fenix TX, No Use For A Name and Sonic Youth as your company, rather than cars and planes. A pretty good trade if you ask me.
