Erised: Seven year anniversary

Apr 15, 2012 11:26

So basically, Erised is old enough to be in grade school. I find this halfway between appalling and impressive, and I'm not sure which way it skews. In a neat coincidence, I'm also stuck on Page Seven.

Technically, I began Erised on April 13, but for some reason, Friday got away from me so I took the photos yesterday on the 14th. As Erised is in hiaitus at the moment anyway, I didn't think the delay was a large concern.

Someday, Erised will look like this:

On April 13, 2005, Erised looked like this:

Today, however, Erised (and Andrew) look like this:

(You can see previous Andrew and Erised photos here.)

I apologize; there's no close-up of Erised in its current state because frankly, it hasn't changed all that much in the last year. I did manage to pick it up in November briefly while between baby announcements, but only finished off two more lines. Here's what Erised looked like one year (and two days) ago:

Erised facts: The Mirror of Erised is a scene from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The picture has been blatantly taken from the original Uno playing cards, when drawings instead of movie stills were being used. I have no idea who did the artwork; if I knew, I would happily credit them, and a friend even contacted Mattel or whoever does the cards to find out, and even they didn’t know, which is pretty sad if you ask me.

The stitching is being done 2-over-1 on 28-count Monaco antique white fabric. There are only full cross-stitches, with no half stitches or backstitching involved. The finished size will be somewhere around 10”x12”. There are a total of 16 pages; I'm currently at the top of Page 7. I don't know how many stitches that is. I don't want to know.

If you’re wondering about the threads hanging down, it’s because like most of us doing massive BAPs, I park my threads. I started parking when I was about halfway done with the first page - if you look closely, you can tell where, because prior to parking, I was going block by block, and you can really see the lines. After I started, the lines became less distinct. (Well, I can see them, anyway.) Parking has also helped me move much faster, or at least it gives me an idea that I’m moving faster. Then, it’s taken me five years to get this far.

My original estimated completion date was....2008. Yeah, right. Currently, I’m thinking I’ll be lucky if I finish this before Andrew graduates high school. Erised spent most of the previous year in hibernation. I have at least one and a half more baby announcements to finish, plus a few that still need names. I'm hoping to be able to pick up Erised in September or October. Then again, that's what I said last year, too.

Andrew facts: Andrew weighs just over 30 pounds and is 37 inches tall. I'm told this means he'll be over six feet when he's fully grown, which is excellent, because I am most definitely not six feet tall and could use help getting things off the top shelves. A year ago, he was a lightning bolt of speed. This has not changed, except now he's speeding vertically as well as horizontally. He has a vocabulary of about 50 words, his favorite being "cake", and is starting to form two-word phrases (usually asking for cake). He has a thing for Shaun the Sheep and Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, loves Thomas the Train, has no interest in potty training, and thinks the toddler pool is the best invention ever. He can smile on command (as seen in the photos above). He is still in love with the cat. The cat is still not impressed.
