Erised: Page Six Complete!

Jul 10, 2010 19:55

I'd been hoping for the end of June, but nine days late isn't too bad. Last night, I finished off Page Six of Erised. Six pages down....ten more to go. As if I want reminding.

Someday, Erised will look like this:

Today, Erised (and Andrew) look like this:

(Hey, you try taking pictures of a baby and a cross-stitch together, when the baby either wants to crawl off the couch or eat the cross-stitch.)

Erised facts: The Mirror of Erised is a scene from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The picture has been blatantly taken from the original Uno playing cards, when drawings instead of movie stills were being used. I have no idea who did the artwork; if I knew, I would happily credit them, and a friend even contacted Mattel or whoever does the cards to find out, and even they didn’t know, which is pretty sad if you ask me.

A closer look

The stitching is being done 2-over-1 on 28-count Monaco antique white fabric. There are only full cross-stitches, with no half stitches or backstitching involved. The finished size will be somewhere around 10”x12”. There are a total of 16 pages.

If you’re wondering about the threads hanging down, it’s because like most of us doing massive BAPs, I park my threads. I started parking when I was about halfway done with the first page - if you look closely, you can tell where, because prior to parking, I was going block by block, and you can really see the lines. After I started, the lines became less distinct. (Well, I can see them, anyway.) Parking has also helped me move much faster, or at least it gives me an idea that I’m moving faster. Then, it’s taken me a little more than five years to get this far.

I stitch while watching TV or movies, mostly on DVD. The latest batch of viewing includes Dexter, Queer as Folk (US version), Doctor Who, Black Adder, and Big Love, as well as assorted movies.

I started Erised on April 13, 2005. My original estimated completion date was....2008. Yeah, right. Currently, I’m thinking I’ll be lucky if I finish this before Andrew graduates high school.

Andrew facts: Andrew will be 8 months old on July 18. He currently weighs somewhere around sixteen pounds and is 26 1/4 inches long. He used to be a very good napper; since figuring out how to crawl three days ago, he has resisted napping since there is clearly crawling to be done. Andrew likes his Jumperoo, and loves to eat his stuffed monkey. His favorite foods (other than the monkey) are sweet potatoes, bananas, mangos, and he will be starting on white potatoes in the morning. He thinks the cat is the most awesome thing on the face of the planet, and I believe he's going to try to marry her one day, assuming he can catch her first.
