Children of Time Awards, Final Thoughts

Dec 23, 2008 20:02

As you know, the Children of Time awards are up for voting. And as there's so many fics up in each category - and only one vote per category, I went through the fics in a mad attempt to figure out how on earth I should vote.

What follows is 20 days, 64 reviews, and one very, very tired reviewer.

I figured my notes might come in handy to the rest of you. )

Well, bless you! Have you visited children_time to share your observations on the organization and the way it's run?

I always feel sort of churlish being grumpy about reviews (or the lack thereof) because after all, shouldn't I write for myself? But fanfic authors are in a somewhat unique artistic category where we offer the fruits of our labour 100% for free--we have to, after all, or risk nasty copyright situations. The only way we'll ever get anything back from what we offer is if our readers take a couple minutes to say "thanks".

And thank you for doing all that. I'm going to set some time aside tomorrow to sort out my choices and cast my ballot.

*OMG*

You rule. Seriously. I would LOVE to read more of your reviews, maybe weekly, of new posted fics. Don't know how that would work ... doubt that YOU'D be willing to do it(!) as pooped out as you are, but wow, that would be GREAT! Your reviews are so literate, so well thought out, so doggone INTERESTING!

THANK YOU!!

Hi,

As the organizer of Children of Time Awards thank you for taking the time to do all of that reading and for recognizing the amount of work put into it. Until a week or so ago I was the only one working on this so yeah...it umm...hell might be a good word for it.

Crossovers will be added. Actually thanks for reminding me of it. I meant to put it on the list and forgot. It will be added before the next round opens on the 1st.

A lot of stuff is changing with the new round. Category size limits, as well as how old fics can be, and how many categories it can be in...this round was completely out of hand...I just honestly hadn't thought it would be this big this fast.

also I have a community up for suggestions and where I'm posting previews of new rules and categories and stuff if you're interested it's children_timeI also sort of agree with the idea of 2 nominations to be included...I tried it at a different awards site once...in practical terms it doesn't work well. Honestly what happens is people get a friend to nominate with them... ( ... )

First, thanks again for tackling the Awards at all. I think you said somewhere that you noticed there was a lack of awards system in the DW fandom, and you were right - coming from HP, where there are so many different awards going on (or were, when the books were still being released), it was a bit odd to find just about nothing in the DW fandom ( ... )

I came from BTVS and HP so like you it was odd to me that there were no awards specifically for this fandom. Very few fanfic sites outside of LJ even. The archive wasn't met with the most favorable response at first (some people have been giving Teaspoon a hard time apparently and Teaspoon's defenders thought I was one of them) but once the Teaspoon mods started posting support for it got better. But it did make me think the awards may not work...obviously I was wrong...and now thinking slightly insane for doing this ( ... )

I didn't have a list but I also used the "which fics I remembered" standard for voting. It was much harder to choose than I expected for some of the categories-I love your comparison with the 1939 Academy Awards-there are so many great writers and fics listed!! I am wildly impressed by the quality of so many of them & the hard work that has gone into beta-ing, polishing & perfecting the stories!

And I would like to second your suggestion that the nominator be required to give an explanation of why the fic should be considered; when I left my nominations I wished I could do exactly that!

Thank you again, you have made the CoT Awards much more fun and very memorable!
