Let's talk about

Music.

OK so, a lot of us are big music fans here on LJ. A lot of us are bandom people.

I'd like to talk about some of the new music that's coming from some of our favorite bands. Specifically, The Used and Panic! at the Disco. Even more specifically, the songs everyone thinks are "bad."

This, my friends, is a new Panic! at the Disco song:

Yes, I know it's hard to hear. But it doesn't matter. Just listen to Brendon wailing and you will know via sonic osmosis that this song SUCKS. BALLS.

Musically, I find it enjoyable in the way that really bad comedies are enjoyable. I keep waiting for it to get better, and that's OK enough sometimes, despite the fact that it never does.

Here are some lyrics reported by people at Summerfest because Brendon enunciates even worse than Patrick Stump (and that's the last time we'll ever be comparing those two, seriously. Just...no.):

true love is rare
true love isn't a fairy tale
true love like ours is worth so much more than diamond rings
love isn't make believe
true love in our pockets ...

NO RYAN ROSS! BAD! BAD! *rolls up newspaper* I said months ago that if they wrote a whole album about how in ~love~ they are with their girlfriends, I'd shove this whole deal. This song is really kind of a travesty.

This, my friends, is a genuinely BAD SONG.

Now, let's take a look at a song to which everyone had a similar reaction: The Used's "Liar, Liar."

This is the first live video of a new song from The Used's recent album that anyone ever saw:

The lyrics to this song contain the chorus:

Liar, liar, pants on fire
Liar, liar, stop your soul from catching
Fire, fire, god and maker
Liar, liar, pants on fire

A lot of people reacted badly to this song because, yeah, it sounds like a big ball of crap. If you only pay attention to the chorus. When the album actually came out, people still refused to give the song a chance, but I've come to genuinely love this song. You see, this is one of the verses:

Liar, liar, house of fire
And the glass tastes messy chew it louder
bet your tummy hurts you, you motherfucker
mother never loved you
father touched you with the hand of god
He's gripping tighter
Saying you will burn in hell, they say
You will burn in hell

The song, as it turns out, is about Bert's childhood in a Mormon household, and the emotional abuse inherent in a strict religious upbringing. The chorus is juvenile because it's about childhood. There is depth here if you give it a chance.

Now, before you jump all over me about hating on the Panic! at the Disco song so early in the game, I do sincerely hope that this song is better on the album.

The thing is, I really think P!atD suck live. They are even worse than Fall Out Boy, which is saying a lot. FOB have stepped it up a lot this tour, and Panic just...sound really, really bad. I lay most of the blame on Brendon's inability to maintain vocal tones when singing live. Seriously, id I wanted to hear stupid Muppets voices I'd go watch actual Muppets, Urie. P!atD is, for me, an album band. I will never go see them live unless they tour with someone else I want to see.

OK, anti-live-music rant now over. As I said, I hope this song is better on the album. I'll give it a chance. But seriously, musing on one's overly-religious upbringing and the emotional scars it left is vastly superior than rambling on and on about ~~~TRU WUV~~~. *gags*

Just go back to writing about drug overdoses and mimes having sex, Ryro. I think it'd be better if you do.
