Inara blinked twice before she slowly nodded. “I’m not a fool, Angel. Treating me as one isn’t the best way to endear me to staying,” she finally stated and fixed him with a hard stare.
Angel sat across from the table from her and sighed. He ran a hand through his hair furthering the disarray. “I would never intend to insult you Inara. And I certainly don’t take you for a fool. But I assure you it’s the truth,” he told her.
“Vampires are a thing of legend. They certainly don’t exist in this world,” she argued. “I think I will be taking my leave,” she added and he shook his head.
“I promise I’m not going to hurt you,” Angel told her and slid into his game face. Inara screamed and shoved her chair back, trying to rise to her feet. The chair clattered to the floor and she tripped, catching her feet in her dress layers, and fell gracelessly to the floor. Angel carefully approached her having slipped back into his human guise. “I assure you I’m not a thing of legend,” he whispered.
“Ta ma duh!” Inara swore as Angel loomed over her. He chuckled at her reaction but moved no closer. “So, you really weren’t kidding,” Inara calmly stated after a moment’s regrouping.
“Afraid not,” he answered with a frown.
“And what do you want me with me? Am I some play toy that you brought out here to hunt in the forest?” Inara asked as she struggled to get to her feet. Angel closed the distance between them and extended his hand. Inara glared at it before finally taking it and allowing Angel to pull her to her feet. She immediately removed her hand stepped back a few feet.
“No. I didn’t bring you out here to hunt you Inara. I brought you out here because you are a Companion and I seek your services,” he reminded her.
“I still think I’ll be taking my leave,” she told him.
“I ask that you give me a day. A day to show you that I’m not going to hurt you. Please, Inara, it has been awhile since I’ve shared my home with anyone,” he pleaded with her.
“Which exactly of my services are you interested in?”
He chuckled and raised an eyebrow. She blushed, unable to contain her composure in the situation. “I’m male, we all have our urges,” he explained and shook his head, running his hand through his hair again. “It’s lonely out here and I wish for good conversation, which I was informed you could readily provide. I picked you Inara because I felt drawn to you like no other in decades. There is so much I need to explain to you, but I need you to trust me before I do.”
“There is something else you seek, Angel. What is the real reason you propositioned me and offered such a handsome fee?”
“My desire for your body does not stop at lust, Inara. I brought you out here because it has been too long since I have had a willing donor,” he whispered. Inara grew pale as his words sunk in.
“You promised me no harm,” she boldly stated.
“And I will honor that promise. Feeding doesn’t have to be painful, it can be pleasurable, which is why I requested your services,” he assured her.
Minutes of silence passed as the pair studied one another. Angel held back nothing, letting her read whatever she could in his eyes. “You have twenty-fours to prove that you aren’t a monster,” Inara finally whispered. Angel offered her a tentative smile and a quick nod of his head.
“Let me get your bags and I’ll show you to your quarters,” he quickly changed the subject. Inara nodded and watched as he disappeared out the door towards the mule. Again, she wondered just what she had gotten herself into.
