Rogue hustled down the street back toward the garage where Logan’s motorcycle was parked. It wouldn’t do any good to be late and cause even more suspicion.
The street was packed with the evening crowd, but Rogue swore that someone was following her. A few discrete glances over her shoulder didn’t prove useful. There were just too many people to sort through. She pulled her coat tighter around her and picked up her pace. It had been on a whim that she had decided to go out. A lingering craving for beer and a cigar had been her undoing. Both had been satisfied and now Rogue needed to get back before someone realized just how missing she was.
The garage was in sight, only a block away, and relief washed over Rogue. She entered and waved at the night attendant. It was abandoned this time of the evening, too late for the arrivals and too early for most departures. She had made it to the bike when the hairs on the back of her neck stood up.
She slowly turned around, heart thudding in her chest, as she surveyed the garage. She jumped when she spotted the dark-haired woman in a red and black velvet dress behind her. Rogue offered her an uneasy smile. The woman stood unnaturally still for a few more moments before moving forward toward Rogue.
“Can I help you?” Rogue asked as the woman approached.
“So many voices, how do you not hear them?” the woman asked as she moved closer.
“I…I don’t know what you are talking about,” Rogue stuttered and moved closer to the bike. She looked over the woman’s shoulder, but the garage was empty.
“Angry men, so full of hate and self-loathing,” the woman whispered and put her hands over her ears and shook her head. “If you had killed them their voices would be overbearing,” she added. She had moved within inches of Rogue.
“Who are you? What do you want?” Rogue asked as she started pulling off her gloves.
“You and I are so much alike. The stars agreed that it was time we met.”
“You’re crazy!” Rogue told her and tried to scoot around the woman, but it didn’t work. The woman reached out, but Rogue jumped back and put her hands out in front of her. “Stay back or I’ll hurt you,” Rogue warned the woman. A delighted laugh bubbled out of the woman. She didn’t heed Rogue’s warning and again lunged at her, this time catching her arm. Rogue didn’t hesitate and reached up and grabbed the woman’s pale face with both hands. She waited, waited for her mutation to take over and drain the woman enough for her to get away, but nothing happened. The woman only smiled down at her and giggled again.
“It only works on the living,” the woman whispered and spun Rogue around, pulling her up against her chest. Rogue fought, but wasn’t a match for the woman’s surprising strength. “Don’t worry, dearie, you and I are going to be the best of friends,” she whispered and sank her teeth into Rogue’s neck.
Rogue screamed, and tried to fight, but it was of no use. The vampire stopped feeding and bit into her own wrist. She forced the bleeding wrist into Rogue’s mouth and completed the process.
Rogue’s dying body was easily lifted into the woman’s arms as she started her ascent out of the garage. The garage attendant’s body lay slumped in the doorway, his neck at an odd angle, as they exited.
“You’ll make a fine replacement for Ms. Edith,” the woman whispered to Rogue’s body as they disappeared into the night.
