Numbers

Numbers represent a lot of things. You can pick a certain number of flowers to give to your beloved; a different number of roses can mean different things. Like three roses can represent ‘I Love You’. Everyone uses numbers in their life, to express how old they are, or what they go on their test. Everyone uses numbers and Kim HeeChul is no exception.

For Kim HeeChul, a couple of numbers can mean a lot, some bring him joy. Like every hug he receives from HanKyung he records in his little pink diary decorated with bunny stickers from SungMin; he swore he wouldn’t use. So far that number is 160.

Some numbers bring him warmth and makes’ his heart flutter like the number he counts and records when HanKyung kisses him on the lips in the hallway, or on the bed when they are making love.

And some numbers make him sad. Like when he counts the days when HanKyung is gone. He pouts and complains on the phone to him, how he has to return home, that he’s bored and no one can make a decent meal. HanKyung just laughs and promises that once he get’s home, he’ll cook him some Beijing fried rice. Yet sometimes those numbers can make him excited, because that means there are less and less days till HanKyung returns home to Korea, home where he is.

There are numbers that he understands and gets. Like when people say that there are 13 people in Super Junior, even if he can’t get some of their names or birthdays right. That he has 12 people that care for him very much despite what he puts them though. And he understands that he has 1 lover, a Chinese man called HanKyung that cooks for him, listens to him, a person that can understand him despite how snappy he can be. And he knows that there is only 1 person that can understand HanKyung’s broken Korean, 1 man can care for the man even when being annoying; himself.

But there are some that confuses him to no end. Like why does there have to be six people that leave to go to China. Why can’t there be seven or better yet just two, he thinks. He thinks that he and HanKyung could be a duet, a heavenly duet because they are a fantastic combo. They could probably get billions of more fans by two than six.

But out of all the numbers in the world there is one that makes him smile and his heart jump. This number makes him want to hear HanKyung say it over and over again in his native tongue. It makes HeeChul want to kiss HanKyung senseless but it also makes him want to hug HanKyung in silence, while he’s whispering that number over and over again into his ear, till they both fall asleep with that number floating in their heads, bringing smiles to their faces. HeeChul doesn’t really care about how many times HanKyung makes him Beijing fried rice, or how many roses are given to him on a date, or how many notes he kept that HanKyung always leaves for him when he leaves for China. All he needs is that number. The number that he knows by heart; the number that he kept practicing and practicing till he can say it without any accent. That number that he says every time he gets, the number that means I love you, eternity; 5201314.

numbers, hanchul
