Going on vacation is always fun, but I do have to draw the line on ridiculously long bus rides. Last week, Mom and I took time off from work and we (plus Dad) went away for a few days. Actually it was quite interesting how it all panned out.
On the Friday, I called home to ask my Dad if he was going to pick us up/if he had any plans that evening for us and he tells me "oh by the way, we're leaving tomorrow" (Apparently, he signed us up for one of those Asian bus tours)
Tomorrow? And you're telling us now? When I told my mother what he had said, she had nearly blown a gasket. But thankfully, no one was injured and we left okay.
But it wasn't that bad at all, like it was long and my bum got numb after awhile but it was a good trip. But alien individuals (those without Canadian passports) should really not join your group, because really it just makes everyone wait hours for 4 people to get cleared entry. Maybe they should have put on a movie to keep me occupied whilst we waited.
We ended up going to Boston, Rhode Island and Connecticut, all in three days might I add. It was a shame that we didn't get to Boston until really late, because I wouldn't have minded exploring around Harvard longer than we did. I could have at least pretended to be a Harvard student and try to get into different buildings. Because that's half the fun, seriously. I am still trying to figure out why the Undergrad Peer Counseling office is only open from 7 pm to 7 am. What if you're in dire need of counseling at lunch time? Or after your 9 am Advanced Calculus class? Like someone is going to stroll in at 5 in the morning looking from some advice. Hmph. Silly Harvardians.
Oh, and we went to the Quincy Market, which I like to think of as a way-cleaner St. Lawerence market and Yorkville hybrid. Shame that we went late at night because none of the cool stores like "Crate and Barrel" or the Discovery Channel store were open. But I did get some fantastic ice cream. Turtle something or other. Quite possibly Turtle Explosion. All I know is that, if I ever go back, I'm getting more. And I'll have to figure out how a child's small ice cream looks like a large one to me. Maybe sizes are different down there, but I doubt that kids can finish one of them. I had issues finishing it and I shared with the parental units to boot. (I've just realized that I have a weird choice of words)
The next day was for whale watching, but boats make me queasy so I opted out to that and went exploring instead. My mother was keen on finding a church (and me being the not so wanting to go to church me) tried to tell her that there probably wasn't one around. But alas, my father got a map and found one in Little Italy. Little Italy had to be the coolest place I went. Other than the toxic smell of the chemicals they used to clean up the garbage cans. There were little bakeries and tht ancient church that I got dragged to. (They had battery or electric operated candles-- that was cool) The highlight for me had to be walking up the street and making my way through all the older Italian men just hanging around on the street in front of one of the cafes. It's so old village style that I had to stop myself from going "Oh you're just too cute" and trying to get a picture of them all. [Yes, I know I'm probably certifiable]
We went to Rhode Island, after a not so appealing lunch in a dingy Chinese restaurant, to visit the Vanderbilt family summer home aka the Breakers. It was huge! And very pretty. I wouldn't mind living there, lots of ground to discover and plenty of super beautiful rooms. Very, very nice. Sadly, I couldn't take any pictures, it was against the rules. I should have gotten one of those over-priced photobooks now that I think about it.
Then, we went Connecticut to our hotel which was a Native American casino. So it wasn't like we actually went to Connecticut for sihtseeing. just to lose money in the casino. I played the slots again, sadly I didn't win anything but it was fun. I liked it. It all those pretty colours and buttons.
And then it was home. which is never as exciting but there were plenty of asian movies that didn't make sense to watch. But were good nonetheless. There was this interesting one that I didn't see all of (mainly cuz the TV was too far away) with funny snakes and a sick kid. So bizarre.
This trip made me realize that my dad's haste to be able to take lots of pictures has destroyed the quality of the ones that he did take. I don't care if you can take over 8000 small pictures if I can barely see what I've supposedly taken a picture of.
