Summary: No matter what Jane will always stand by Maura's side. Inspired by the song “Stand By Your Side” sung by Celine Dion.

Stand By Your Side
Jane groaned in frustration, tossing and turning in her bed desperately trying to fall asleep. Looking over her eyes connected with the glowing red numbers on her side table. She saw that it was only 2:30 in the morning Jane let out a heavy sigh. Suddenly the sound of the “Funeral March” filled the room, flipping herself over she reached for her phone.
“Maura, what's wrong?” Jane asked without hesitation.
“I don't want to be alone tonight,” said Maura.
Not needing to be told twice Jane threw the covers off of herself and immediately started to get dressed. Grabbing her wallet and service weapon, she walked out of the bedroom and scooped up the slumbering Jo Friday.
“I'll be there in twenty minutes Maura.”

Comforted that Jane was coming she placed the phone back into its cradle and walked over to her sofa and sat down to wait for Jane. Looking around she found silence around except the slight thump of Bass making his way slowly to his owner. Shaking her head she turned her attention to the pictures that lined her mantle. Maura studied them with a keen eye, each picture was either of her as a young girl with her adopted parents or formal pictures of her, Jane, Frost, and Korsak, and some of just her and Jane. Focusing her attention of the pictures of her and Jane her eyes began to water and the tears began to fall.

Since the first day there was an immediate connection between the two them. What started out as friendship soon turned to something more. Everything changed when they both went undercover at the lesbian club Merch. Throughout the night she watched as Jane “flirted” with her “dates” and she could not help but feel a bit jealous. Soon enough the feeling of pure love filled every fiber of Maura's being, just like that things began to change. Maura knew instantly that she was falling for her best friend.
“Why do these things keep happening to me? I fall for the ones that I can't have, Jane Rizzoli deserves someone better than me,” said Maura. Tearing her eyes away from the pictures she looked down and saw that Bass had finally made his way to the front of the couch, “Oh Bass, what am I going to do?”
The only answer she got was Bass retracting his head back into his shell. Suddenly the sound of her doorbell filled the room. At first she started to make her way to her door and stopped, after what happened with Doyle she knew she needed to be careful. Placing her hand on the doorknob she spoke firmly and asked , “Who is it?”
“Maura, open the door.”

Jane heard the tumblers turning as Maura unlocked the door slowly it opened, there stood Maura clad in silky midnight blue pajamas. Crouching she put Jo down allowing the small dog to wonder Maura's home. Standing Jane's eyes immediately connected with Maura's eyes, what she saw broke her heart. Not needing to think twice Jane pulled Maura into a tight and comforting embrace. Placing comforting kisses upon Maura's brow she let Maura take whatever comfort she needed.

“Everything going to be alright Maura. I'll protect you.” Jane said in a comforting voice.
Unable to let go of Maura, Jane slowly guided the both of them to the bedroom. Pulling down the covers Jane gently settled the both of them down on the bed. They spent the next few minutes in that same position.
Jane felt hopeless that she couldn't do more to ease Maura's pain. Inside she felt anger towards Doyle, the sperm donor that turned Maura's life upside down. In a matter of days Maura loss a brother she never knew and found a father that killed for a living. It felt as though the world decided to punish Maura for just being Maura.

Feeling Jane holding her close made Maura felt safe and loved. All her life she had searched for that someone who would always somehow making everything okay in some way. Snuggling herself closer to Jane she lifted her head and gave Jane a small smile.
“I'm sorry.”
A look of confusion fell upon Jane's face, “You have nothing to be sorry about and before you say anything let me speak first.” Maura gave Jane a small nod and let the tall dark-haired beauty speak.
“Your entire life changed in a matter of days, everything you knew was brought down to the ground. The one thing that didn't come crashing down to the ground is me. You probably think that since Doyle was the sperm donor that I would treat you differently, but your wrong. You are still Dr. Maura Isles, Boston Medical Examiner and our resident “better than Wikipedia” extraordinaire. But most of all your my Maura Isles, my colleague, and my best friend. I will forever stand by your side through both the good and the bad, that is my solemn vow to you.”

For once in her life Maura was speechless, hearing Jane's words sent a spark through her entire body. Maura looked at Jane and saw love in her friends eyes and knew that there was no false truth to her words.
“You said my Maura. What did you mean by that?” Maura asked.
Jane lifted her hand and placed it on Maura cheek and gently stroked the soft skin there and said, “It means that I love you Maura Isles and that I will always stand by your side no matter what.”
Hearing this Maura's smile grew wider and a flutter of joy filled her soul. Finally, knowing that Jane felt the same way Maura took the opportunity to finally show just how much she felt for Jane. Unraveling herself from Jane's arms she lifted herself up and draped her body over Jane's and smiled at her and said, “Then let me say this to you detective, I love you and I want to be your Maura that is if you want to be my Jane? This is my solemn vow.”
Jane gazed at the woman above her and saw pure love and adoration, so Jane did the one thing she wanted to do for a long time. Leaning herself up she placed both hands on Maura's face and said, “I would be honored to be your Jane.”
Pulling Maura closer Jane placed the most gentle kiss upon Maura's lips that sent fireworks through both of them. Pulling back both Jane and Maura could only say one thing.
“Wow”
