A Darker Domain, Val McDermid

I really enjoy Mcdermid's books, even when they're not part of the Tony Hill & Carol Jordan novels. :)

This one isn't as horrible and sick as the other ones.

It is sad, so very sad.
The fuked-up destinies of the characters made me cry a few times.

Misha, left by her father at 4. A sick son and a family that can't or won't help her, and yet, still fighting, still believing in the happy end. *hugs her to death*

And I think it's safe to assume Mcdermid is a fan of Cold Case because I could hear the music in every flashbacks.
Well maybe I am the fan who sees her show everywhere. The characters weren't ones we could find in Cold Case but the ambiance was just the same.

We don't have much time to become friends with Karen or Bel. Bel seems to be only there to discover things Karen-the-cop could credibly not. She is just a tool. And Karen seems to be a real bitch at work. I was feeling sorry for her boss.

Anyway I was enthralled by Mick disappearance and what it did to his family. Of course, we knew he was involved in the kidnapping but not how and it made it really interesting. (I was totally buying the mick/andy in the wood before Phil mentioned it... Them raising the kid as their own, etc. etc. Too bad, the author is to complex for that)

I hated Mick for his final letter. It was cowardly and distateful. Oh yeah, Gabe go see your rich asshole of a grand-father but ignore your poor half-sister I deserted. And to know that once, that guy had been a communist !

I was so disappointed in him : so weak and a toy in Cat's and Toby's hands. Stupid. I was glad Adam wasn't his son in the end.

Mcdermid totally knows how to make her readers sick of humankind. XD

Can't wait for the next one.

Fun Fact : I lend some books by her to M. just this week. And tonight D's girlfriend wanted them. They hadn't moove from my bookcase for months!
It must be in the air. :)
