“Between court sessions in April 1793, Judge Spencer sat in the piazza of his house in Anson County, a red cap on his head. As he dozed there and nodded, a large turkey in the yard took the motion of the cap as a challenge. He charged at Spencer, throwing him to the floor, and attacked him. Spencer suffered a wound on the hand that became infected. On April 20, 1793 he died of erisipelas and shock.”
