[The device is attached to the trunk of a tree. An enormous beaky head swings into view, one red eye looking into the screen. The beak opens and emits a series of hoarse caws and croaks. A girl's voice sounds at the same time, only vaguely in synch with the beak's movements.]

Testing. Test-ing. Okay, you either work or you don't.

The hell is this? ( Read more... )

[polychromatic], btw she's a time traveller too, not cursed, well isn't that peachy, secretly unsure

[ ...????

Oh dear... it can't be that curse again, right? The one where dinosaurs appear and try to eat people?

*confusion*

No, wait, this one is... speaking? ]

Hello?
Excuse me, but are you actually… I mean you look like a dinosaur. I have only seen them once, but the resemblance is remarkable.

Yes, hi?

There'd be a reason for that resemblance. I'm a Quetzalcoatlus, last and most perfect of the pterosaurs, the pinnacle of the azhdarchids, the largest creature to fly on its own power in the skies of Earth. [She rattles that off less like a boast and more like a 'yes, get on with it'. Also she's wrong, but doesn't know about Hatzegopteryx.]

Not actually a dinosaur, but from the same time.

I see. You will have to forgive me. Since I am not actually from Earth I really can’t tell the difference.

[And who would be able to really? ^^” ]

My name is Eagle Vision and I am from a planet called Autozam.

The city must have brought you from a past history of Earth’s past? It sounds like you are familiar with at least that much, maybe you travel through time often?

So alien, huh?

Eagle Vision. Metal. I'm Janine.

Once. It was complicated.

I am human I was just born on a different planet.

[Go figure. ]

Metal?

[Setting that aside for now. ]

It is nice to meet you Janine. I’m sure someone must have said by now that this place is called ‘The City’ and that there is no way that we know of yet to return to the world you came from. But, it isn’t really so bad here once you get used to it.

...Okay. [She'll just have to accept that, she supposes.]

The name. You're not in a band, are you? Do people just call you Eagle Vision all the time, or do you have a nickname?

Yeah... This is all amazingly odd, but I'm not really in a hurry to be back there, so.

People usually call me Eagle. Vision, is my last name.

[He does think it funny that so many people from Earth have such strange reactions to his name. ]

Why would a name like that mean I was in a band?

Ah, good. I was about to start calling you E.V.

It would make a good stage name. A lot of musicians pick those to sound cooler.

E.V., well, that would be a different kind of nickname.

Will you be staying in the woods? I doubt you would have a problem with the monsters that live there but I should warn you about them anyway.

I've known A.J.s and T.J.s, but the initial-based nickname is just so underused. Probably for good reason. I'd be J.F., which doesn't sound cool at all.

Monsters, huh? [Wary now.] What kind of monsters?

Those nicknames sound more normal than either E.V. or J.F.

[Almost guaranteeing that at some point you will be called J.F. ]

They come in all shapes and sizes really. The smaller monsters I doubt would cause you too much trouble but there are some larger kinds. The trees in the woods are pretty safe though, if you have to get away, climbing one of those is a good way to… but you might be able to fly? Maybe climbing wouldn’t be needed at all.

Huh. How large is large?

Eh, I'll figure something out. The day is young.

I was never able to get close enough to them to get an actual size measurement… however they are a good deal larger than a human.

[Janine has no idea how big she is - there aren't a lot of good reference points in the Cretaceous, so she's been assuming she's only somewhat larger than a tall human.]

Huh. Well, maybe I'll find something from the air.

[And Eagle isn’t exactly sure how big Janine might be either. The dinosaurs he met were about human height, had sharp claws, and tried to eat people he cared about. He is just happy she is not one of those! ]

That would be easier. It is much better to get a good look at everything from up there.
