..yea, I saw a commercial for it (life gems) yesterday while I was watching a movie on AMC (the channel not the person, although that might be kind of fun to watch a movie on Patty... ^_^ ).

Ooo! Like the intro to that one Bond movie... You know where the mostly naked chick was dancing while things were projected across her skin and typical cheesy Bond music played... (Now why can't I remember which one it was. Grr... I feel a Bond movie marathon coming on.) I don't think Patty would go for that though.

And now onto the rant: Thing is about those gems though, is it's just playing on people's useless sympathies about their lost loved ones and useless greed about shiny rocks. That diamond is no more "grandma" than the maggot that nibbled on her when you shove her in a pine box in the ground. *eyeroll* You certainly don't see maggots on leashes being sold to grieving widows do you? Sentimental drivel really. People die. It's part of life. People would get over it faster if they didn't have their own personal Sisyphusian rock to bear.

Useless Sympathy?

That's the most dick thing I've ever heard you say, I think. If that person gets some sort of comfort out of the ring/pendant/whatever, then it makes life that much easier to deal with.

Mayhaps the company doesn't give a shit, but It's not really the company you should give a flying fuck about. I know a girl that keeps the top of every soda can she drinks, because her mother used to do it, and It reminds her of her mother. Now, yes, to be literal, it is Useless. She won't get much out of it, but damn, if it makes her sleep at night, what gives anyone the reason to criticize her?

Useless Sympathies. No no no, Mayhaps to you. Look from other peoples eyes, mayhaps through another who's not quite so calloused.

Useless, yes. I wasn't critizing the people who purchased such a product, I was critizing the company that greedily preys on people's sympathies when they are emotionally weakened and not in a state to be capable of realizing that there are healthier ways of dealing with their grief ( ... )

My appologies to you, Allison for this happening in your journal.

No need to apologize.

I won't post on this matter again.

If you don't want to post on this again, don't post on it again. If you are not posting on this for my sake, don't worry about it. I think this is an interesting topic of debate (the gems, not you being calloused :P).

I'm still debating this in my own mind. I would have to say that my views are heavily dependent on how much profit this company is making on these gems. I would much rather have a ring that my grandma used to wear. In fact I have two such rings that I always wear, one from my grandma and one from Bill's grandma. I like wearing them, it makes me think of them, helps keep their memory alive. But, if no such ring existed, would I do this... probably not.

If you don't want to post on this again...

I don't want to spark an emotionally charged arguement, and that is where it was going. If it is an open-minded debate, that's different altogether.

But, if no such ring existed, would I do this... probably not.

I have two books of poems from my grandmother. One was her poems that were religious in nature, and the other was of Longfellow poems. Neither follow my tastes and I have looked at neither since they have come to me. However, do I think of my grandmother? Every time I drink a cup of loose-leaf tea, every time I write one of my own poems, or water my plants. It's not objects that define memory, it's our actions. It's not the ring itself, it's your action of slipping it on your finger every day. The object is just an object.

When I reread this, I realized it did not come out at all how I meant... It should have been: "But, if no such ring existed, would I purchase a life gem... probably not."

*Of course* I would still think of them. ::chuckles at self for not catching this while I was writing it::

O_o Yes. I should've noticed that that didn't make much sense coming from you. Guess I'm slow! :D
