Clever children more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder.
The UK's Telegraph (2/3) reports that, according to a study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, "straight-A schoolchildren have a much higher risk of suffering from bipolar disorder than less intelligent pupils." Specifically, "clever children are almost four times more likely to suffer from the condition," a finding that "supports a commonly held belief that exceptional intellectual ability is associated with the mental illness."
In the study of "713,876 individuals in Sweden," the UK's Press Association (2/3) reports that researchers used "hospital records and school reports...to match academic achievement with the chances of having bipolar disorder between the ages of 17 and 31." Interestingly, "children with the poorest grades were also more at risk," being nearly "twice as likely to develop bipolar disorder as average achievers."
The UK's Independent (2/3, Laurance) reports, "The link was strongest among those who studied music or literature." The Independent adds that "the study was conducted by researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, with colleagues from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden
