I remember my shock when I learned that shop owners were required (I think I am remembering this right) to decorate their shops accordingly during/around public holidays. I thought the posters or the decorations that appeared on walls or glass windows, or were hanging from the ceiling, did so out of the exuberance of shop keepers' characters; and was astounded to learn that it wasn't in fact as spontaneous and voluntary as I thought.
I remembered that today when youtube showed me a link to an article describing how "a sleepy fishing village in Ontario has been fined for failing to fly a rainbow flag during Pride Month." The
article (written rather tastelessly and published on an awful site that is teeming with ads) says how the council of a Canadian village had a case brought against them when they "refused to declare June 2020 as Pride Month", and "failed to fly an ‘LGBTQ2 rainbow flag’".
I had no idea that it was one of the duties of a town council to make sure all notable events are duly announced, and flags displayed. I thought all those pride paraphernalia were just statements that various organizations or groups took it upon themselves to make.
