Fun with Math: Part 1 - Squared Away

Nov 12, 2005 18:58

Hi, kiddies!! Do you know what time it is? That's right! It's time for "Fun with math" with your uncle Bill!!!

Anyway, I sitting here. Bored. It is saturday. Another provider finder day. So I am sitting here and what am I doing? Thinking about interesting (to me, anyway) oddities with math.

There are two little things I would like to show you. The first, I call the "Squared Away Principle". I do not know if there is an official name to it, but that is just what I call it.

It goes like this:

1. Take a Number. We will call this "Number 1"
2. Square Number 1 and write down the answer. We will call this "Answer 1"
3. Think of another Number. We will call this "Number 2"
This is where it gets complicated, so pay attention.
4. Add Number 2 to Number 1 and write down the result. We will call this "Number A"
5. Subtract Number 2 from Number 1 and write down the result. We will call this "Number B"
6. Multiply Number A and Number B and write down the result. We will call this "Answer 2"
7. Square Number 2 and write it down. We will call this "Final Number 1"
8. Subtract Answer 2 from Answer 1 and write it down. We will call this "Final Number 2"
If Answer 2 is negative, the two minus signs cancel out and you just add the numbers.
Ex. 4 - (-3) = 4 + 3
9. If all was done right, Final Number 1 and Final Number 2 are the same.

Example #1.

1. "Number 1" = 5
2. 5 x 5 = 25 "Answer 1" = 25
3. "Number 2" = 6
4. 5 + 6 = 11 "Number A" = 11
5. 5 - 6 = -1 "Number B" = -1
6. 11 x (-1) = -11 "Answer 2" = -11
7. 6 x 6 = 36 "Final Number 1" = 36
8. 25 - (-11) = 25 + 11 = 36 "Final Number 2" = 36

Example #2.

1. "Number 1" = 11
2. 11 x 11 = 121 "Answer 1" = 121
3. "Number 2" = 1
4. 11 + 1 = 12 "Number A" = 12
5. 11 - 1 = 10 "Number B" = 10
6. 12 x 10 = 120 "Answer 2" = 120
7. 1 x 1 = 1 "Final Number 1" = 1
8. 121 - 120 = 1 "Final Number 2" = 1
