I'd say A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, but I think it soothed my soul more than anything.

Hah, just one book? I'll name a couple. The Mists of Avalon, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, Kushiel's Dart Triology, and Threshold.
One book I'd like to have on a desert island:
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.
One book that made me laugh:
Lots of books make me laugh out loud. I always feel ridiculous lauging out loud while reading too. Harry Potter books are probably the most amusing.
One book that made me cry:
Only two books have ever made me cry. Where the Red Fern Grows and it was either Blackwood Farm or Blood Canticle - you know the one where Louis kinda... you know. I don't want to spoil it for Leslie who will some day read it.
One book I wish I'd written:
Life of Pi or The Count of Monte Cristo.
One book I wish had never been written:
The Bell Jar because it is the most depressing, hopeless book in the world. After reading it all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and never move or breathe again. I was thanking Sylvia Plath for making me hopeless and depressed for many days. Do not read this book if you are depressed to begin with.
