Spent a frustrating hour and a half on Friday trying to find a dress for RG's brother's wedding next Saturday - yippee! thought I, the first wedding I've been to for years where I haven't been either pregnant or breastfeeding, I can have an Actual Posh Frock!
After trekking round most of the High Street with SSP obligingly asleep in the pushchair, I had just about concluded that every major retailer hates me since everything I tried on either didn't fit (I have broad shoulders but no boobs to speak of, and a narrow waist but correspondingly bigger bum), or just didn't suit. Big bold patterns seem to be in this summer, and most of the dresses I tried were wearing me rather than the other way round, and gave the impression that the pattern was preceding me into the room by several feet. And what is with the 1970s smocking on bodices and the tie-dye thing? Was that a good look first time round? Will the passage of 30-plus years have improved it in any way? Do I want to go to a wedding dressed the way I would have been when I was eight? We think not.
But hurrah, just as I ran out of time (and SSP woke up grumpy!) I spotted something on the rail in good old Marks and Spencers. Tried it on, perfect fit, wasn't sure if I felt brave enough for the bold pattern - so wimped out and dragged the Resident Geek into town with me on Sunday to inspect it (heroic effort, and hurrah for the motherly M&S staff who retrieved and entertained the Small Persons while Mummy tried on her frock!)
Hearty thumbs up from the Resident Geek, who actually told me he fancied me in it. (Mind you, he'd already veto'd the trousers and tunic I had been planning to wear, so he probably felt he'd better approve something and quick!)
Boing boing. I even got a hat to match (apparently it is a Hat Wedding). Now all I need is the blasted weather to improve (cold and wet in southern England atm!)
