I was surprised at how quickly they announced our new President last night--I remember 2004's going well past my bedtime and learning the results at school the next day. But I only had to make it to 11 PM and we knew. I had some friends over for a Daily Show/Colbert Report Election Day Party. We made nachos (using blue and white chips, so they were patriotic, election-themed nachos). And there was much screaming and cheering and clapping when Jon Stewart announced that Barack Obama would be our new president.
I'm not going to lie, I cried watching Obama's acceptance speech, I was so happy. I remember seeing him speak during coverage of the 2004 democratic national convention. Back then, my immediate response was, "When is he going to run for president? He has my vote!". I've been on this boat for four years, and it's so, so fulfilling to see this dream come true. Idealism is not dead. We have not buried hope. Yes we can, and we will. He has a long road ahead of him, but I believe he can fix our country, or at least set things in motion.
He's so articulate, so well-spoken, and so clearly intelligent. What a breath of fresh air.
Today, for the first time in years, I am unconflictedly proud to be an American. Many years from now, I'll be able to tell my kids that yes, I voted for him.
Today, the future looks so much brighter than it did before. Idealism is not dead. We have not buried hope. It's a brand new, beautiful America out there, and January cannot come fast enough.
