Elaine & Drumming

My pool cue is named Elaine. She's a Meucci that I bought back in the early nineties. I haven't really been able to use her in more or less a decade because her shaft has been warped. I always wanted to order a new one, but it always seemed like there was something better to do with the hundred bucks. Well, there still is, but I finally made the plunge.

I tried to order a new shaft a couple of years ago, but, since I didn't know the model number, they needed to know the size of the shaft. They suggested I find someone with a micrometer, and that person could measure it for me. Well, I made a few stabs at finding such a thing -- I called billiards stores and a couple of local university science departments, but no luck.

When I called Meucci a couple of days ago, I asked if I could just send them pictures. They said yes. I did so, and they emailed me back this morning with the info. So, now I know that I am the proud owner of, amusingly enough for you qabala geeks, a 333 Series. If you wanna see one that looks like mine, go here:

Mine is the 333-5.

I ordered my new shaft today. Three weeks to arrive.

In related news, I also recently set my drumset back up after years of lack of use. It is a sorry mess. So far, I've managed to get the snare drum operational again, but it was a challenge. The whole thing had rust and dirt, and screws were missing from the strainer and the internal muffle. I was able to get a new screw for the muffler, but I could not track down a screw that matched the strainer. It must be a damned odd size. Miracle of miracles, I found a screw from another snare drum rattling around in the bottom of a box, and so was able to fix my drum up. It's all cleaned, oiled and shiney. Next, the toms. The floor tom, in particular, has a cracked head and is missing a screw in one of the lugs that hold the legs.
