Hello, boys and girls, and welcome to my first weekly column here on LJ. What’ll it be about? The entertainment world (the world I seem to live in). Why here? I dunno where else to put it…Anyway, I figure I’ll just talk about random pieces of news in movies, TV, DVD, etc. The one thing I won’t do: music. What can I say? I’m too out of touch for all

1. If you liked, I'm not gonna knock that. We all have our personal tastes. Actually, I'm gonna combine 1 and 2, as they have similar topics. Again, let me say I did not see this movie, so of course, I do not know the whole story. I have, however, not only read reviews but caught the trailer for the film. If this was supposed to be a comedy, it didn't seem like it. To me, it seemed like that the titular character was, well, mad. Let this be a lesson to directors: not all films based off of plays or musicals are good. In any event, dismissing a movie without seeing it isn't always the case. Catching the trailer (which is, in theory, supposed to be enough of the "good moments" of the film without giving everything away while still being an accurate representation of the movie itself) and reading enough summaries/reviews of the film can often times be enough for me. It's a filtering system that almost always works.
3. First off, I did actually see Wedding Crashers because Vince Vaughn is a funny guy (don't believe me? Go watch Swingers). In regards to that movie, let me just say it's about time we returned to the raunchy (but not always stupid) comedy; for a while now, studios have been so worried that if a movie has an R rating, especially a comedy, it's not gonna sell. This is the perfect counter-example: it cost about $40 mil to make and has grossed over $80 mil in its first 10 days alone. People know this is an adult comedy, and that is what they've been wanting.
4. Of course that's a reason for decreased tickets. I'm glad you picked up on that. But, this box-office slump is compared to sales from last year, when ticket prices weren't all that much lower than they are now. Going to the movies hasn't been a cheap event in recent years, but that hasn't stopped a fair amount of America from going at all. Let me ask you, though, Gemrose, and all my other readers: how many movies have you been to in the past few months? Have you been detracted from going at all because the prices are on average $0.50-1.00 higher? Is that really the main reason hoards of former moviegoers are finding something else to do on their Friday nights?
