Corneroffandom Chronicles' Summerslam 2013 recap!

Aug 19, 2013 00:39

This PPV had me from the first time CM Punk and Brock Lesnar encountered each other. I've been knocked around a bit as a wrestling fan lately thanks to Ricardo's suspension and the resulting end of Delcardo, but Punk and Brock still intrigued me, as did Bryan vs Cena to a slightly lesser extent so I ordered, for the first time since Money in the Bank 2011. All in all, I have to say it was worth it. I haven't decided if I want it on DVD, but Brock vs Punk was so good, I probably will.

Anyway, here's my recap.

Preshow:
RVD vs Dean Ambrose for the US title. Dean enters alone, as does RVD. He avoids RVD's initial attack, hits a shouldercheck. Lock up, Dean takes RVD down. RVD fights out, knocks Dean down and roundhouse kicks him before punching him. Floats over, hits a clothesline and a side headlock. Cover follows, two count. Dean fights free, punches and chops RVD in the corner. RVD returns with punches and kicks, takes knees to the face. 2 count. Dean hits a neckbreaker, two count. Locks in a chinlock, followed by more punches and a drop kick. Two count. RVD fights free, hits a clothesline and a crossbody. Another two count. He bodyslams and then attempts a splitlegged moonsault, but Dean gets his knees up before clotheslining RVD. Two count. RVD kicks him and goes for a 5 Star Frog Splash but then Roman and Seth interrupt, barely halfway down the stairs when Mark Henry comes out, followed by Big Show. Shield meets up on the outside while the other three men join up in the ring, and we go to a brief commercial to sort this all out.

When it returns, the match has resumed with the four men not in the match watching from opposite corners. A two count, then Dean locks in another chinlock but RVD fights out just to get tossed from the ring, landing between The Shield and Mark/Show, who faces off as Rob recovers. Ambrose goes out and collects Van Dam, just for Rob to reverse his attempt at a slam, laying him out on the barrier before hitting a leg drop from the apron. Throws him back into the ring and splashes him to a 2 count. Hits a bodyslam and Roman stops Rolling Thunder by grabbing his leg. RVD rolls him up anyway, to a 2 count. Dean hits a spinebuster, gets another 2 count. He then misses an elbow off of the top, but RVD's next attempt at a 5 Star is ruined by Seth distracting him, leading to Dean making another cover to two. Rob hits the Rolling Thunder this time, and manages a 5 Star this time, but Roman enters and spears him, causing the match to go by DQ. The Shield quickly leaves, titles all remaining with them, while Big Show and Mark Henry enter the ring to back RVD up.

Summerslam begins (I had a weird giddy moment at the opening screen warning against pirating the PPVs and stuff came up... yeah, this is what happens when I don't order for years, haha) with Miz out to discuss the main event matches. Halfway through, Fandango and Summer Rae interrupt and dancing around Mike as he demands, "Really? Really? Really?" then welcomes us to Summerslam. Opening video package for Summerslam and then Jojo from Total Divas sings the national anthem.

The show starts with Bray Wyatt vs Kane in a ring of fire match. Kane out, then Bray, Harper and Rowan. Bray sits in his rocking chair for a few moments before entering the ring, the flames surrounding it as the match begins. Bray circles Kane before walking into a choke, the larger man punching him. Bray returns punches of his own before failing at a suplex attempt, reversed just for Kane to miss a kick and clothesline. Bray splashes him and then tackles him before tearing at his face a bit. More kicks and punches but he gets caught in another choke, Kane's attempt at a chokeslam going nowhere so he instead hits him with a boot, followed up with a clothesline and sidewalk slam. Finally Bray gets control and starts demanding weapons from the Family, Rowan going for a kendo stick which he tries to push under the bottom rope, just for it to catch fire (I guess throwing it over the top rope was a bit beyond his comprehension?), a firefighter on hand putting it out with an extinguisher.  Rowan and Harper get their hands on it, trying to kill the flames with it, and it seems to work, but the flames regrow after a moment and blocks their entrance once more. Bray's distraction allows Kane to hit two chokeslams, before he motions for a tombstone, but then the Family brings over a fire retardant blanket, smothering the flames so they can crawl in and attack Kane, checking on Bray before bringing Kane over so he can hit the Sister Abigail on the monster, allowing Bray the victory. Afterwards, the family stretches Kane out on steel steps in front of Bray in his rocking chair, collecting the other half and dropping it onto Kane's skull. The arena lights die and Bray leans over to examine Kane in the faint light of his lantern before getting up and leaving, Rowan and Harper dragging Kane between them in the darkness.

Recap from the pre-show of Paul Heyman announcing that CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar will be a no DQ match airs.

Next up, Damien Sandow vs Cody Rhodes. Damien has a mic and he says that in the past there have been famous pairings, such as Sherlock and Watson, or to dumb it down, Batman and Robin. With all of these, there were leaders and sidekicks. Cody was his sidekick, but tonight Damien sends him back to the pairing he deserves with his father-- Dumb and Dumber. Cody comes out then and... omg! He shaved the mustache! No more creepy Cody! The two exchange punches and Cody takes control, slamming Damien. Two count. Damien then throws Cody onto the apron, then sweeps his legs out from under him, knocking him to the floor before returning to the ring. He lands a suplex, but Cody kicks out at one, fighting out and trying a Crossrhodes, which Damien reverses and hits the Elbow of Disdain. 2 count. Damien twists him up in a submission but Cody gets free and Damien climbs the top rope just for Cody to stop him and hits a slam. Another 2 count. Damien tries to send him out of the ring again but Cody hits a dropkick over the ropes and then follows it with Shattered Dreams, ala Goldust, haha. Damien regains control, gets another 2 count, but Cody fights free. Damien rolls him up into yet another 2 count, and Cody lands a Disaster Kick to a 2 count of his own. Damien rolls up again, two count again. Cody rams into the post when Damien moves but he can't keep the advantage and eats a Cross Rhodes for real this time, Cody achieving the 3 count. As Cody celebrates, Damien hugs his briefcase in the corner.

Alberto Del Rio vs Christian for the World title. They show that Del Rio has a black eye, blaming the Unprettier from Smackdown (lololol) and as Lilian introduces them, ADR interrupts her and requests she do his intro in Spanish. *huffs vaguely* Whatever, finally the match starts and ADR overwhelms Christian early on but he fights back and tosses ADR out of the ring, missing a baseball slide, but when he tries to get back into the ring, Christian slams him back first against the ropes from the outside. He then climbs the top rope, but ADR stops him with an enziguri, which causes him to fall into a tree of woe, vulnerable to more kicks until Del Rio pushes him off, into the barrier. 2 count and ADR continues working his arm until Christian fights out, just to get slammed. The audience chanted for Ricardo here T.T

ADR tries to kick him while he's prone, but he moves and Del Rio slips through the ropes to the floor. Christian splashes him from the turnbuckle, the two men then exchanging blows until ADR gets the advantage again, going to the top but eating Christian's boots instead of landing any kind of offense. Christian lands a dropkick off of the top, followed up with a volley of punches in the corner. Del Rio misses with another enziguri, Christian lands a crossbody, gets a two count. ADR asks then for a timeout, just to try and fail to land further offense on his opponent. Del Rio avoids the Unprettier and instead hits a Backcracker from the top rope, another two count. Christian rolls him up, gets a two count as well. Del Rio lands an enziguri, another two count. ADR goes to the second rope, misses a splash. Christian then succeeds at a flying elbow but Del Rio corners him and forces him onto the top rope, trying for a suplex until Christian fights out. ADR then escapes a sunset flip attempt and lands a moonsault, achieving another two count. Christian fails at spearing him, and gets dropkicked for his troubles, Del Rio succeeding at another two count. ADR begins calling for the armbar but Christian drop toeholds him just to be met with yet another kick, and another two count. Del Rio, frustrated, exposes his knee but Christian rolls him up, two count. He finally hits a spear but ADR flips through into an armbar, wrenching back even as Christian fights, finally tapping.

ADR celebrates until Renee comes in to interview him, and he says this is a great night because he's still our champion, and still represents Latinos, that they need a hero, and they have one... the WHC, Alberto Del Rio. Mm hmm.

Miz is shown interviewing Maria Menounos, when Fandango and Summer Rae interrupt again, dancing around Miz and Maria until Mike leads Maria into a tango, the two of them dancing away and leaving Fandango and Summer staring on in disbelief.

Natalya, accompanied by the Funkadactyls vs Brie, accompanied by Nikki and Eva Marie. They exchange slaps and Natalya goes for the sharpshooter but Brie gets to the ropes, Nikki knocks Natalya off and tangles her up in the apron. Brie hits two leg drops in a row and continues to dominate. Finally Natalya gets control and locks the sharpshooter in but Brie sends her backwards into the turnbuckle, Eva and Nikki trying to get involved from the outside, the Funkadactyls confronting them to keep Natalya safe. Brie rolls her up but only gets a 2 count. Audience comes out with a We Want Ryder chant :D  Natalya slams her and locks in the Sharpshooter for real this time, and Brie taps. Nat and the Funkadactyls celebrate in the ring as Brie is helped from ringside by Nikki and Eva Marie.

Catering is shown. Ryback, facing off with another backstage worker. He tells him the soup is cold, but the worker explains it's gazpacho. Ryback tells him to take it away anyway, that he doesn't like cold soup, but Ryback spills it down his shirt before grabbing the full vat of it and pouring it over his head.

Time for CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar in a no DQ match! YAY! Punk goes right for him, Brock shouldering him into the corner and beating him down as Heyman smirks on. Punk fights out but Brock slings him away and slams him back into the corner. Punk gets up, kicks him and throws him out of the ring before diving through the ropes onto him. Punk tries using steel steps on him but Brock shoulderchecks them into Punk, lifting him up before trying to run him into the post, but Punk gets out and sends him into it instead, hitting an axe handle off of the top rope. Punk then goes to the announcer's table and clotheslines him, just to get distracted by a lurking Heyman, going after him, Paul tripping over the steel steps as he tries to get away. He's just grabbed him when Lesnar arrives and throws him over the Spanish announcer's table, then over the other commentary table, slashing his back on the corner of one of the monitors. Brock then stomps the table cover over Punk's back before slamming him against the floor. He then throws him back into the ring and Punk tries to fight back but Lesnar levels him with a clothesline, resuming shoulders in the corner before locking in a bearhug. Punk elbows out but Lesnar knees him and Heyman yells for Punk to stay down. More knees to the midsection and Brock begins scraping his knee against Punk's ribs, returning to the bearhug.

Punk elbows out again, continuing to fight, climbing to the turnbuckle just for Lesnar to catch and throw him, before slamming him into his knee. Three separate two count covers follow this and Lesnar goes for a side headlock. Punk fights out and bites Lesnar's ear, kicking him all over before following it up with punches until Brock staggers, Punk going once more to the top rope, kneeing him in the face, both reeling. Punk lands repeated knees to the face until Brock catches him, just to eat the third knee after all. Punk lands the flying elbow from the top rope, getting another 2 count. His first attempt at a GTS goes nowhere, Brock reversing it into the F5 but Punk knees him again, lifting him once more. This time the GTS is reversed into the Kimura but Punk fights out, twisting it into an armbar, then into a triangle choke. Lesnar almost taps but ultimately lifts him, powerbombing him... though it's not enough, Punk still holding the submission! Lesnar lifts him again but this time Punk elbows him until Lesnar powerbombs him. Another two count and Lesnar hits three German Suplexes on him (Aw, Eddie, I miss you), getting another two count.

Brock leaves the ring to get a steel chair, but Punk climbs the turnbuckle and dives, Brock trying to use the chair as a shield, both men eating a bit of the move. Punk gets up first, and control of the chair, cracking Brock until he goes back into the ring, Punk following just for Brock to grab the chair and regain ownership of it, Punk hitting a lowblow before Lesnar could use it on him. Punk hits him again before going uptop with the chair, elbowing the chair into him. Two count! Punk stands and hits him with the chair over and over again just for Heyman to jump up onto the apron and grab the chair, just for Punk to grab him. Brock rejoins them then, tries to F5 Punk but Punk grabs onto Heyman's tie, leaving Lensar no choice but to break the hold. Punk hits the GTS just for it to stop at another two count,  Heyman breaking up the count. Punk begins chasing him around the ring but  when he slips into the ring, Lesnar is waiting and grabs him, Lesnar looking less and less enthused with all of this the longer it takes. His attempt at another F5, however, is quickly reversed into an Anaconda Vice. Brock looks like he's about to tap when Heyman returns, sliding a chair into the ring. Punk catches him though, stepping on the chair and pulling him to his feet before they stare at each other. Finally Punk punches him, just to lock in the Anaconda Vice on him, but Punk pays for it when Brock recovers and slams Punk with the chair, F5ing him against it to victory. Brock and Heyman leave and Punk gets to his feet, receiving a standing ovation.

Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn vs AJ and Big E. Dolph starts with the advantage briefly, but E splashes him. 2 count. E stretches him into a submission before dragging him to AJ, who slaps him. Dolph lands a dropkick on E and AJ tags herself in. Kaitlyn enters, takes AJ down but AJ hits a spinkick. 2 count. AJ sends her into a turnbuckle and locks in a side headlock, but Kaitlyn fights out, just to eat an elbow from AJ. 2 counts. Two neckbreakers and AJ skips around her for a bit. Kaitlyn recovers and gets in minor offense before AJ snakes around her in a rearnaked choke, Kaitlyn fighting out and sending her into the corner. AJ lands another dropkick, however, but Kaitlyn responds with a shouldertackle and AJ tags in Big E. Dolph enters and downs him, keeping him down with ten elbows to the chest. Big E manages to avoid his fame-asser, kneeing Dolph in the midsection and getting a 2 count, which Kaitlyn breaks up before it can go to 3. AJ then blocks Dolph's pin attempt from the outside but Kaitlyn knocks her away, allowing Dolph to hit the ZigZag and achieve a 3 count.

We see Miz again, and of course Fandango interrupts again. This time Miz has had enough and punches him, leaving him laying. Should've done it three hours earlier, Mike!

Main event time. Daniel Bryan vs John Cena for the WWE title. HHH comes out first for guest refereeing, Daniel out to a sea of YES! and Cena out to a majority of boos. They lock up, and chain wrestle for a bit until Daniel tosses Cena over him. Another lock up and Cena forces him down to three 1 counts in a row. Daniel bridges out and no matter how Cena tries to overpower him back down to the mat, Daniel's not budging and tries to lock in the Yes! lock, but Cena gets free and rolls out of the ring, going to talk to the doctor, who he tells that his elbow is fine. He returns to the ring and locks in a headlock, Daniel getting out of, but Cena covers him to three more 1 counts. Daniel takes him down and locks in another submission, Cena fighting out and trying for the AA, but Daniel squirms to freedom, ending up on the apron. Cena shoulders him off and he hits the announcers table, but Daniel recovers quickly and sends Cena into the steps. Tries slamming him off of them but Cena reverses it, Daniel crashing to the floor. Cena returns him to the ring for a cover, but he kicks out. Cena punches and then whips Daniel into the corner, slamming him to the mat once more. 2 count.

Cena tries a side headlock but Daniel gets out, begins kicking him. Cena recovers briefly but Daniel manages a forearm that downs Cena, leading to his kicks to the midsection, just to miss the kick to the head when Cena recovers and hits a shoulder tackle into a 5 knuckle shuffle attempt that fails when Daniel kicks him again. The two struggle for dominance until Cena hits the 5 knuckle shuffle for real, then going for an AA but Daniel lands on his feet and dropkicks Cena from the top rope. Another 2 count and he goes back to kicking Cena, beginning to target his bad elbow more. Cena tries to fight out just for Daniel to tangle him up into... the STF! Yep, his own move, haha. Daniel drags him away from the ropes and and suplexes him into a 2 count. German suplex, 2 count. Cena fights out, lands an AA but Daniel floats it into the Yes! lock. Cena breaks it but Daniel locks it in again until Cena gets free, Daniel then locking in a third submission. Cena fights out again and rams Daniel into the corner, but Daniel still hasn't released him! Cena finally throws Daniel upside down into the corner and both men struggle to their feet.

Cena lands another AA, but gets only a 2 count. Cena goes to the top rope but Daniel catches him, Cena pushing him off twice. Daniel hits him with a dropkick before suplexing him, staying on the turnbuckle so Cena takes all of the force of the move. He then headbutts Cena off the top, 2 count. Cena leaves the ring and Daniel tries to dive on him but Cena catches him, goes to the top and hits a leg drop. 2 count. Cena carries Daniel to the top and positions him for possibly another AA, but Daniel elbows free. Cena gets separation and awkwardly forces him off of the post, locking in an STF of his own. Daniel reverses it into an Yes! lock but Cena makes it to the ropes and Daniel breaks it. HHH notifies the doctor to check on Cena, but he waves it off, insisting he's ok. Daniel kicks him until Cena clotheslines him to the mat. They exchange blows and both men collide, struggling to their feet while leaning on the other until Cena slaps Daniel, who slaps him back. They exchange more slaps until Cena catches Daniel, his AA reversed as Daniel faceplants him into the mat. Daniel goes uptop but Cena catches him again, trying another AA, but Daniel kicks him and YES! YES! YES! before kneeing him into a pin. New WWE champion! Cena watches him celebrate before interrupting, forcefully turning him around. They exchange words, then Cena shakes his hand, and HHH's, before leaving.

Confetti flies, fireworks go off as Daniel watches on in awe, but then... Orton's music hits. He makes it to ringside, staring at Daniel, lifting his briefcase. Daniel's urging him to enter, willing to fight, but Orton puts the briefcase back down, turns around and heads up the ramp... just to pause and look back over his shoulder. At that moment, HHH kicks Daniel in the stomach and pedigrees him. Orton enters the ring and hands over the briefcase, not needing to do anything but pin the champion, HHH counting the pin and lifting his hand in victory. Show ends.

All in all, I enjoyed myself. I feel kind of bad for Daniel, but the booking makes sense when you think about it, I guess. I was hoping for more Miz, and maybe a surprise return of Morrison (I knew it was a long shot but I still had hope, haha =.=) and the lack of Ricardo is annoying also, but can't have everything, I guess. Punk vs Brock was so good! My favorite match on the card. Everything was pretty solid though.
