When Lucy entered Peter’s studio, she was not surprised to find her three older siblings there.
Peter was reading some -she supposed- important papers.
Susan was reading one of the big books -“The Foundations of Narnia”, she read on the cover- that were in the library of the castle.
And Edmund was preparing to play chess against himself.
All three of them were doing boring stuff.
“I’m bored,” she said, looking at her eldest brother, for she knew -as well as the others- he could never say not to her.
Susan couldn’t suppress her amused smile and Edmund tried his best to stifle his laugh.
Peter glared at them and then turned to Lucy, sighing. “Fine, I’ll play with you,” he said, standing up.
Lucy smiled in triumph, which made Susan giggle and Edmund finally laugh.
“Shut up, you two,” he said in a warning tone, but it produced the opposite desire.
“Come on, Peter, ignore them,” Lucy said, grabbing his hand and urging him to follow her.
Just as they were exiting the room, Susan called out to them. “Don’t stay out too late!”
Peter nodded, waving at her with his free hand.
They walked out of the castle and through the gardens. Lucy let go of Peter’s hand and ran a little ahead.
And as Peter watched her greet every narnian they came across, smiling happily all the time, he couldn’t help but feel her merriness was contagious, for he had the urge to laugh without any apparent reason.
“Can you tell me where we are going, Lu?”
Lucy turned to look at him and smiled. “We’re going to explore the woods near the beach.”
“Ugh, Lucy, you could’ve asked Mr. Tumnus to go with you,” Peter said, trying to sound angry, but failing.
“But he is sick and needs to rest,” Lucy replied. “Besides, you weren’t doing anything too important.”
Peter sighed and soon after they arrived to their destination; Peter following his little sister into the woods.
Lucy lead the way through, as if she knew the place better than no one; she wanted to reach their destination before it was too late.
“We’re almost there, hurry up, Peter!” she exclaimed and began to trot.
Peter increased his pace, feeling a bit confused at that statement. “Lucy, are you sure you want to explore? You obviously know this place very well.”
Lucy nodded, still not stopping. “Yes, but first I need to stop by somewhere before we begin to explore… There!” and she hurried forward, kneeling in front of a branch.
Peter followed her and leaned in to look at what Lucy was seeing. He smiled in amazement.
A cocoon was breaking, revealing bit by bit how an insect -a butterfly- emerged from it, and within seconds it was free and revolving happily around Lucy.
“Fly, little friend, because now your new adventure begins!” Lucy said, laughing.
Peter smiled at her happiness, knowing that right then, to Lucy, everything was an adventure.
A great, little adventure.
