She can hear them bickering from her spot in front of the fireplace, which is rather impressive -she’s inside of the house and they’re outside- at least to her. And she wonders what the argument is about this time.
Is it about Narnia and Susan’s decision to move on with her life? Or is it, yet again, one of the boys that fancy Susan?
The door slams open and then is closed again. And, suddenly, Lucy can hear loud and clear what the bickering is about.
“Stop it, Peter, stop it! There is no Narnia for us anymore! We have to move on… You have to move on!”
So, it’s Narnia again, she thinks.
She doesn’t really need to see what is happening to know, it’s always the same routine.
Susan bites her lip, struggling to not break down. Her trembling figure faces away from her brother, a slight tremor in her voice, whenever she yells at him. And the tears gathering in her eyes, waiting to be released, but Susan is stubborn and she refuses to cry.
Everything about her screams at him, begging him to understand, to move on.
Her sister runs up the stairs, halting before she reaches the top at the sound of Peter’s voice.
But Peter is stubborn, too.
“I don’t want to move on!! Why can’t you understand?!” he pauses. “Su, we were so happy together…”
His whisper is so heart-breaking that Lucy has to bit her lower lip to prevent the sobs that attempt to escape.
Oh, Peter, she thinks and she knows that Susan’s thoughts are not far from hers.
Peter struggles to maintain calm and collected, to be strong for them both, but his form shakes with his stifles sobs. His hands fists hard enough to leave his knuckles white, clenching his teeth and closing his eyes tightly, as if to prevent a torrent of tears from falling, but there are no tears left in him. He whisper that last sentence again, his voice so full of emotions.
Everything in him screams at her, begging her to see, to not give up.
Susan’s response comes in a soft, shaky whisper. “Your friend, Lucas, asked me out yesterday… and I said yes,” she makes a pause, maybe to calm herself, “Now, if you excuse me, I need to get ready for my date.”
The echo of her steps and, what Lucy supposes, the sound of a door closing is all her sister leaves behind, along with a very silent Peter.
She risks a glance at her brother, for she has never see him stay so quiet after the mention of one of Susan’s suitors, and is confused at what she sees.
Peter’s emotionless expression changes almost drastically to one of anger -of rage- and he storms upstairs.
Lucy turns to look at the fire again and thinks that, even though she should be worried for her siblings, she knows Peter would never hurt Susan -he takes his anger out on fighting the older boys from school- he loves her too much to even think of it.
She soon shuts out the yelling of her siblings, focusing instead on happier times -focusing on Narnia- where Happily Ever After is a reality and not just a fairytale.
“That’s the melody Mr. Tumnus composed to you.”
Lucy looks behind her to find Edmund standing there, hands in his pockets and a smile on his face, and she realizes that, yes, she is humming that melody.
“I didn’t realize when I started humming,” she says softly.
He frowns after a few seconds and stares at her, but when he opens his mouth to speak, he stops at the sound of their sister’s angry voice.
“Out! Get out, Peter! I’ve had enough of this! I don’t want to see you anymore! I-”
She shares a confused glance with Edmund at the sudden silence, when they are both startled by a loud and rather unrecognizable sound. However, they are grateful that the girls’ bedroom door is closed, for their mother decides to enter the house just at that time.
“Lucy, where is Susan and Peter?”
“They’re upstairs, mum.”
Mrs. Pevensie nods and smiles. “Oh, all right. Can you go and tell Susan her date is here?”
Lucy frowns slightly and stands up, walking closer to the windows to see a young man standing in their front yard. Peter is so much better looking than him, she thinks. “I don’t think she’s in the mood to go out, mum, she told me she wasn’t feeling too well this morning.”
“Oh, dear, I hope it is nothing too serious. I better go and see if she needs anything…” Mrs. Pevensie says, turning towards the staircase.
Lucy sees this through the reflection of the window and turns around quickly. “No, it is fine, mum; she probably is in those days of the month. Besides, she told me she wanted to be left alone.”
She watches as her mother smiles and heads towards the front door. Lucy goes to stand next to Edmund to have a better look at what is happening and she can’t help but feel satisfied when the boy leaves, clearly disappointed.
“You lied,” Edmund whispers, obviously surprised.
“It was necessary… I don’t want Peter getting into fights, nor do I want to see Susan crying herself to sleep, anymore.”
Her mother closes the door and walks pass them to the kitchen, asking her to tell Susan, and also Peter, that dinner will be ready soon.
“I’ll go tell them, mum,” Edmund says, and after smiling at Lucy, he runs upstairs.
Lucy sighs and returns to her previous place in front of the fireplace, allowing herself to enjoy the peace that she’s able to find in her memories.
When Edmund returns, he sits by her side and stays silent, looking too flustered to not catch her attention.
“What happened, Ed?”
Edmund doesn’t answer; he keeps his gaze on the fire, looking uncomfortable.
“I do hope you’re not becoming ill.”
Her brother coughs a little, turning even redder. “No, I’m fine, Lu… It’s just… they were fighting, again, that’s all.”
Lucy nods and decides to leave the matter alone, not wanting to make her brother more uncomfortable than he already is.
Still, she wonders if that really is the whole truth.

Peter closes the door and says nothing; he only caresses his sore cheek.
Susan takes a few steps back, watching his profile and trying to calm down, but the guilt is already crawling under her skin.
“Peter…” she begins, but doesn’t know what else to say, though she knows an apology is needed at the time.
Peter looks up at her and, before she can react, Susan finds herself pinned to the wall.
“I’m not done with you, yet…”
He crashes his lips against hers in a passionate -and somewhat desperate- kiss.
She tries to fight the wave of pleasure and fails miserably. And Susan knows that, even if she tried to push him away, it would be difficult with her hands pinned above her head.
Suddenly, the door opens and a loud gasp forces them apart -but not enough for Susan to try to escape-. They both look at the entrance, only to find their little brother.
Edmund blushes profusely and averts his gaze to the floor, coughing nervously. “Uh… Mum says dinner will be ready soon…”
Before any of them -Susan mainly- can utter a word, Edmund closes the door, leaving only the echo of his steps hurrying down the stairs.
Susan wants to go after him, to apologize -why, though, she doesn’t know, because it’s not like he hasn’t seen them kissing before-, but Peter stops her even before she tries.
“I said I wasn’t done with you, Su…”
He kisses her again, tenderly, and this time, she doesn’t try to fight him. She surrenders to him.
