“You are doing it again, Susan.”

“You’re doing it again, Su.”

Lucy’s giggle snapped her out of her trance-like state, and she blushed feeling a little embarrassed.

“I’m sorry, Lu,” she said, smiling apologetic. “But, as of lately, I cannot seem to keep my focus for long.”

“Oh, it’s alright, Peter will arrive soon, and your focus will come back-to him.”

Lucy’s devious smile made her almost wish she would go back to being an innocent, ignorant child.

“I knew I shouldn’t have told you.”

Susan began playing with the grass under her hands, trying to enjoy the afternoon as she usually would, especially in the company of her dear sister, but the anxiousness she felt at the upcoming arrival of her brother had her on edge, and more distracted than she liked to admit.

“Oh, Susan! Don’t say that, it isn’t good for you to keep such a thing locked up in your heart!” Lucy grabbed her hands enthusiastically. “It is a wonderful thing to be in love, Su. You mustn’t keep it to yourself, Peter ought to know.”

“I don’t know, Lu.”

“You’ll see, he will be delighted to hear it because he feels the same!”

Her sister’s excitement was highly contagious, but she felt too nervous to let her merriness affect her.

By Aslan, she hadn’t felt this nervous since the Coronation, and that was five years ago.

“You think so?”

“I know so.”

Susan sighed, her logical mind still refusing to believe what her heart wished, what her heart knew.

“But how can you be so sure?”

“I know love when I see it, Su.”

“Oh, really?”

Her daring response was meant to deter Lucy, divert her attention and engage her in a playful banter that would, luckily, make her forget about the matter at hand. But, much to her dismay, it only seemed to encourage her.

“Yes. Peter always has this goofy smile when he looks at you, when he thinks of you.”

Now that, was one badly-gone-wrong plan, as she was the one being left speechless.

“And you, Susan, always get this faraway look whenever he’s present in your thoughts.”

Lucy’s cheeky grin heightened her embarrassment, but all that was forgiven and forgotten as soon as the sound of trumpets reached their ears and they were both at their feet in no time, because true to Lucy’s word, King Peter had arrived.

Susan turned to look at her husband and gave him an apologetic smile, but said otherwise nothing.

“Susan, it’s been a year already,” he started, and she sighed, foreseen another discussion. “I know he reminds you strongly of your brother; granted, he is the living image of Peter, but you can’t focus solely on him. We are trying to build a family here.”

She looked at him, surprised, confused, for this was not the usual course of their discussions. “What are you saying, John?”

“I’m saying, that unless you divert that unwavering attention towards our marriage, he won’t be able to stay with us.”

“Are you telling me to abandon him?”

“No, I am telling you to pay less attention to him, and more to me, your husband!”

Susan glanced briefly at the baby boy sitting a few feet away from them, on the carpet, and bit her lip roughly when she found him looking at them, waiting. His stuffed lion, the one Peter had given him for his first birthday, was tucked safely under his little arm.

“He requires my attention, John, he’s not self-sufficient. He needs me,” she snapped back, not willing to let this discussion go, not this time.

“I need you too!”

“His needs come first!”

John raged silently for a moment, taking deep breaths in order to calm down a bit, and she was inwardly glad, as she didn’t like to yell in front of the little boy.

“Maybe, it’s time to look for his real mother,” said John, after a while.

“I told you, she died giving birth.”

“Then her relatives, I’m sure they will gladly take him.”

“She had no family, they all died before her.”

“Then we will give him to a foster home, I don’t want that brat in my house!”

Susan glared icily at her husband, and it seemed to be enough to shut him up for a while. Turning around, she moved towards the baby and picked him up, carrying him away. She could hear her husband following them, but didn’t care, they wouldn’t stay long anyway.

It hadn’t been a lie when she said the baby’s mother had died, because she had, only not physically but emotionally, the very day Peter boarded that train, the very day Aslan took them all away.

“Susan, dear, I am sorry, I didn’t mean to say those awful things about William, but you have to understand, I didn’t expect it to be this way when I agreed to take him along with you.”

“You knew very well that I would never leave him. If you want me, you must want him as well.”

She moved quickly, placing William in his crib while she filled a small bag with his clothes and then her clothes. She didn’t know what would happen later, she only knew she needed to get out of that house. There was no other option; she wasn’t going to wait until tragedy fell upon them to act.

“I know, I’m sorry, but I just never thought I would have to fight a baby for your affection, Susan, it shouldn’t be this way,” John grabbed her by the arms, stopping her packing. “He’s just your brother’s child.”

After a prolonged silence, she smiled sadly at him and whispered: “Exactly.”

Not giving a chance to comprehend what her answer meant, Susan left her husband standing there alone. With William perched firmly on her hip, she stepped out of the house.

Once upon a time, things would’ve been different. She would have had her happy ending and everything would have been perfect. Once upon a time, Peter would have still been alive and well and with her, helping her raise their child, like they were planning on doing before that horrid train crash took him away. Once upon a time, she wouldn’t have been so proud and would have accepted to tag along with her siblings and maybe, just maybe, they’d be together now, all of them.

But once upon a time was a long time ago, and in this world, in this reality, Heaven was closed for someone like her.

Someone that welcomed temptation with open arms.

So caught up in her memories, Susan never saw the truck coming their way.

“You… are doing it again, Su.”

Queen Susan turned her head to look into the eyes of her lover, blushing slightly as she gave him a timid smile, and felt silly because there was nothing to feel shy for; he had already seen everything of her, inside and out, so this sudden shyness was pointless.

Still, wrapping the sheets more tightly around her, she turned to lie on her side. “I apologize… I got lost in my thoughts, that’s all…”

“You got lost in your thoughts…”

The lazy grin he gave her -lazy and very, very sexy- set her body on fire. Oh, so very slowly, he propped up on his elbows and turned a bit to face her properly, and she knew, even if he wanted to, there would be no way for him to shake off that sated aura that seemed to surround him now.

“After what we did, you shouldn’t have any thoughts left,” he smirked, and Susan felt his talented hands sneaking their way down her side under the sheets. “I know I don’t.”

The blush that accompanied her all through the last few hours came back with a vengeance. “Peter…”

King Peter chuckled softly, and leaned into her, peppering her skin with lazy, wet, tempting kisses. He tugged the sheets off her body and pressed her harder into the mattress, easily slipping between her parting legs. Kissing his way up, he came face to face with her in no time, and the intense look on his face left her shivering with want.

“Peter…”

“Let me chase your thoughts away…”

She gave him a shaky smile, all the invitation he needed, really, and Peter didn’t waste any more precious time to kiss her musings away.

Feelings his hands work his way down her body and straight to her groin, probing, testing, she could only whimper encouragingly, urging him on as she let her hands roam his back and his front, following the hard lines of muscles until they were both groaning breathlessly. There had been enough foreplay already, she knew that, Aslan, Peter knew that.

That’s why, with a roughish kiss, he slipped into her in one swift motion.

She was all sensations after that.

When she opens her eyes, (and finds herself lying in the middle of a small clearing, surrounded by tall, thick trees, with green, green leaves and beautiful, beautiful flowers, and looking right into an impossibly blue sky, and listening to the soft whisper of life around her), she knows, never mind that she’s been in hundreds of other places that look like this clearing-she just knows.

She knows like she knows her own name. She knows like she knows her own son. She knows like she knows him.

She just knows.

So she stands, and savours the feeling this -Narnia- gives her. Peace, happiness-finally. And then she walks, in search of the shore, because she knows where it is, she knows, she remembers-she never forgot.

And she hears the waves, smells the sea, feels the breeze, (she can hear their laughter, smell their unique scent, feel their joy), before she can see the ocean. Before she can see them.

She smiles, because there’s nothing else to do at the moment, (she doesn’t know if she’s been forgiven, she doesn’t know if she’ll be allowed to stay), and then she feels His presence next to her, feels His soothing breath and His forgiving eyes-

“Susan.”

-and she knows.

She hugs Him then, like she’s yearned to do since they were summoned by Caspian, all those years ago, like she never got the chance to. She thanks Him, because she is grateful, for being given a second chance, to be back, to be here, with Lucy and Edmund and Peter and William.

She is grateful.

A gentle nudge of His head, and she’s walking down to the shore and admiring the scene in front of her eyes because-

Lucy is kneeling in the wet sand, not caring about her gown, as she helps Edmund build a sandcastle for her William, and laughing because her little boy makes their attempt at recreating Cair Paravel a little difficult as he keeps smashing it down. All is forgotten when Edmund scoops the boy up in his arm and settles him on his shoulders and starts running towards the water, Lucy in tow, and they splash around, laughing joyfully (and it’s a beautiful sound, their laughter).

And then, there is Peter (just like she remembers him, golden haired, bright smile and tender gaze, and happyhappyhappy; just like she always wants to remember him), carrying William around, and laughing with him and smiling at him and holding him close to him (and their resemblance was so strikingly obvious it hurt).

She smiles.

-this is what she’s always wanted, ever since William was born; this is all she wanted.

“You’re doing it again, Su.”

Blinking away her current thoughts, Susan finds herself looking up into Peter’s eyes, practically shinning in happiness, startled.

“Doing what?”

It is a silly question, for she knows what he means, but too much has happened to her in such a short span of time that her mind is having difficulty processing. She still can’t believe she’s back.

In Narnia.

“Spacing out on me. You always get this faraway look on your face whenever you’re deep in thought.”

Peter smiles at her, and he suddenly pulls her into his arms and she can only comply and go willingly. It is, after all, what she’s been yearning since the accident. His mouth is brushing kisses on her neck and up until it reaches her ear. She hugs him tight.

“What were you thinking of?”

Everything, she wants to say. The past, present and future. You, Edmund, Lucy, William, John, Mum and Dad, that boy from school, Caspian, Mr. Tumnus, Phillip, Mr. And Mrs. Beaver, Aslan; everything.

But she only smiles and kisses him lightly on the lips, for the first time in a long time, feeling complete and utterly happy.

Really.

“Does it matter now?”

He kisses her firmly then, because no, it doesn’t really matter-

Later she and Peter will join Edmund and Lucy and her -their- William and finally start living the life she always dreamed of. She will remember a girl that closed her heart to salvation and condemned her soul to damnation by falling prey of temptation and she will smile because that girl got her second chance, or maybe not because that’s the kind of stuff Once Upon a Time’s are made of and she knows, Once Upon a Time means a Long Time Ago and now…

Now she simply (relishes in Peter’s embrace and the comfort it gives her knowing there’s an eternity full of this ahead of her and) doesn’t care-

-not anymore.
