2011/08/23 - Kings Vol. 3 - THE BAWDIES, the telephones, etc. | 新木場STUDIO COAST

Aug 24, 2011 22:47

This actually started out as a live summary, but considering the rate at which I'm rambling on, it might possibly pass off as a live report. The formatting isn't the same as my usual reports, but I'm too lazy to change it. Here you go.

Kings Vol.3 at Shinkiba STUDIO COAST!

The order of bands for the day was:
PILLS EMPIRE
QUATTRO
THE BAWDIES (I was REALLY surprised when I heard the SE. Thought that they'd definitely be 4th or 5th since they're really major)
the brixton academy (They have the same set up as the telephones, so I had another mini-surprise since I thought this meant that the telephones were up 4th)
the telephones

But of course I was only there for two bands (didn't know the other 3), so you can has the setlists for THE BAWDIES and the telephones.

THE BAWDIES
SE: Sam & Dave "Soul Man"
1) IT'S TOO LATE
2) JUST BE COOL
3) KEEP ON ROCKIN'
4) ANNE
5) YEA
6) B.P.B.
7) HOT DOG
8) YOU GOTTA DANCE
9) A NEW DAY IS COMIN'

Roy's MC has evolved. It is no longer "the bra and panty of your heart", but "the bra and t-back (thong) of your heart". And you don't remove it, you cut the string. Sigh, Roy, why like that? -_-

the telephones
SE: happiness,happiness,happiness
1) Monkey Discooooooo
2) sick rocks
3) A.B.C.Disco
4) (new song) - Might have been called "Yea Yea Yea" or something. Of the bass-thumping variety, more bass-heavy than usual.
5) Urban Disco
6) HABANERO
7) I Hate DISCOOOOOOO!!!
ENCORE
8) Love&DISCO

It was the QUATTRO's drummer's birthday, and while Ishige was talking during the encore, he emerged from the left of the stage clad only in a pair of leopard-print (or something similar) briefs (he had a nice body, so thankfully no eyesore there). You could tell that this appearance wasn't planned, because the dudes onstage were all DDD: And while Ishige continued talking, he started chatting to our dear Ryoheeey at the side. We couldn't hear what they were saying, but Ryoheeey was negotiating pretty furiously and looking flustered. Then after a few moments, he turned away to the other side and double facepalmed/buried his face in his hands in a "NUOOOOOOOOOO WAI YOU NO GO AWAYYYYY OMG YOU'RE RUINING OUR SHOWWWWW" manner, with the QUATTRO drummer smiling unrepentantly at the crowd. Much lolz. After that, all the other members from the other bands came onto stage and joined in for the last song. Ryoheeey passed his bass mid-song to someone else (found out later from Twitter that it's the PILLS EMPIRE bassist/guitarist/someone in there who knows how to play bass and isn't the vocalist) and started roaming around the stage like all the members from the other bands.

Nobu's shirt was hanging off one of his shoulders the whole time, so much so that he might as well not be wearing a shirt. Picture shows how he looked like before the set even started -_- He kept trying to flex his biceps at the crowd (he tried twice). But we all know that our Ah Boy is of the stickman variety, so while it's not like he had no muscles, they were especially lean and therefore... it was not a sight to behold :/ But if our bandmen were not of the #lolzforever or #orzforever variety, we wouldn't love them as much, would we? :D

You can also has a Ryoheeey shot, because it turned out pretty nicely.
No Ishige shots even though I tried the hardest for that, since I have a friend who's an Ishige fan.

In squee non-BAWDIES/telephones news, the vocalist/dude standing in the center for PILLS EMPIRE is le hawtness. The "I will suck you into this black hole and devour you" kind. Maybe it's just because he looks and behaves bad-ass, doesn't look like he gives a flying fuck about anything, jumps into the audience any moment he can... the list goes on. I also only realise how heavy people are when I have to support crowdsurfers, because I was at the front during the last part and he dived into the audience again. He's probably the only crowdsurfer so far I've had to support that I'm not annoyed with though haha.

Also, I caught the tambourine that QUATTRO's vocalist threw into the crowd and have no idea what to do with it now. Hur. It actually flew to a few rows behind me, but rolled off the mass of raised hands and landed on the floor beside me. In other news, Ishige threw his lip sunglasses into the crowd, and the tall boy standing beside me caught it. Yes, literally BESIDE ME. Because he was tall and had the highest reach of all the hands there. I saw it land squarely in his hand. ^$%&@^#%@# Trade my tambourine for the sunglasses prs? :( The tambourine was a QUATTRO fan magnet though. After the set, a girl came up and was all "This is the tambourine I gave him!" and after the show, two girls saw me taking a photo of it, came over, asked if it was the one Takeshi threw, and asked if they could touch it. At any rate, I don't know if I'm expected to return it, but since no one's saying anything, I'm going to keep it. Though I would have loved to have caught Ishige's sunglasses instead :|

Although this is BAWDIES/telephones-centric (they're the reason why I'm there anyway), I did watch all the other bands as well.

PILLS EMPIRE was pretty dramatic. By that, I mean the set up and all. I mean, the very first thing I see all day (they opened the show) is a faceless person wearing a pair of goggles with red LED lights (their drummer). Then a hooded figure (vocalist) comes on stage wearing a long black hood a la Death, and waving a huge black flag. I didn't really dig their music except for maybe song 3 and the last song, but the moshers in the first section certainly did. Was glad I didn't decide to go into the first section yet. I like it that they're the only band to make full use of the screen, and they were showing footage of marching soldiers from WW2 (I think), hazard signs (probably nuke-related), and there was a real time video of them too, though layered with special effects like blur and grain. Before the show started, there was also a video (which I thought was made by Kings) which was your basic "no moshing, no diving, any injuries are not our responsibility" public service announcement. But then it went on to say that these rules didn't apply to the PILLS EMPIRE's vocalist, and that was when I knew that it was part of their act. The videos fit the whole atmosphere very nicely, so kudos to them. Also liked how the vocalist keeps running around the floor, because it kinda breaks the "I'm performing here, you're watching there" feeling.

Yes, he was right in front of me, at the second set of barriers.

QUATTRO was pretty much chillax music. I was trying to think of a genre for them, but I remember hearing country and surf-kinda tunes, so I gave up trying to classify them. There was a part where the vocalist sang parts of "Oh! Susanna". I sang along since I knew the song, but was wondering how many people in the crowd tonight actually knew that this ditty wasn't composed by the band. Also, the guitarist standing on the left ran into guitar troubles the moment the band started playing, and he was out for the whole first song. The vocalist tried (and kinda failed heh) to do an MC while waiting for the trouble to be fixed. Unfortunate souls :( Their music was fine, though it did leave me confused a couple of times as to where the tune was headed.

the brixton academy did dancey songs. Pretty club-like atmosphere. Thankfully it was of the variety that I could dance to. They opened a bottle of alcohol the moment they came on stage and passed it around the audience. During their set, they passed around two more.

Anyway, in conclusion, glad I was persuaded by my new friend to enter the mosh after PILLS EMPIRE, because it was the best and closest view I've had of all of the bands so far in a large arena.

Now what should I do with this tambourine...
