This expresses my experiences completely. That clueless person, who asks the simple question of, "What is Yaoi." The pause in conversation where I think of how to explain.
My favorite meaning is, "Yamete-kudasai, oshiri ga itai!" ((Please stop, my bum hurts!!))
It also reminds me of the first time I had to explain what 801 (pronounced ya-o-i) means. It was awkward, but not in the same way as I was expecting. It went pretty much like this:
Mom: What are you reading? It must be good because I heard you laughing.
Me: Um, nothing much. Just some fan story I found online.
Mom: Oh? What about? (comes closer to computer)
Me: Erm, it's yaoi. (nervously looks away)
Mom: What's that?
Me: When boys like other boys... a lot....
Mom: How do you mean? (thinking hard)
Me: Man-on-man butt-smex....
Mom: Oh..... (looks at screen) Isn't that [insert character] from [series]?
Me: Yeah, mom. (embarassed)
Mom: I thought he'd be with [insert other character] or at least on top!
Me: OoO (can not speak)
Has this happened anyone else?
