Yummy Japanese Dessert

Jul 01, 2010 16:01

Today I made one of my favorite Japanese desserts. I don't think it's well known in the States, but ever since I tried it years ago, I've been looking for a way to make it at home. This morning, in my email, I got my answer.

It's called [Coffee Jelly] and is pretty much what the name implies: a jello like dessert made with a coffee base. It's usually served with either whipped cream on top (which I never liked) or a flavored simple syrup. I'll teach you how to make both kinds. If you're not a coffee drinker, tea can used-- green (w/ maccha powder on top) or Earl Grey (w/ syrup) work really well.

Supplies: (4 servings @ 1/2 cup each)

COFFEE TYPE
A sause pot big enough to hold around 2 cups (0.5L) of liquid
2 cups (0.5L) of already made coffee-- can use instant
2 TBSP (28.5g) sugar -- more or less, to taste
1 TBSP (14.25g) gelatin powder (about 1 packet)
4 TBSP water (to mix w/ the gelatin)
Heat source (stove, hotplate, whatever works)
Refridgerator or a cooler filled with ice

TEA TYPE
Replace 2 cups of coffee with 2 cups hot water & 3 teabags (4 for green tea)

How To Do

1. Mix water and gelatin until combined
2. In pot, combine coffee (or tea, sans teabags), sugar, and gelatin mixture over low heat until combined and gelatin/sugar melts completely. Remove from heat.
3. Now divide up into individual servings and chill until set
4. Enjoy w/ either syrup, cream, or powdered maccha; which ever you prefer.

SIMPLE SYRUP
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
*2 TSP flavoring (which ever you like) -- optional
(Note: no matter how much/little you want to make, remember! Equal parts sugar and water)

How to Do
Bring to a boil over a low heat, then let simmer until sugar is desolved completely.*
WARNING: This can get VERY hot, so please handle with care.
