Skyfall-related mind dump! So I can see it again, and have room for more incoherently expressed feelings and thoughts ;) I wish Craig were enjoying his ride as Bond as much as I am. I was so excited at the prospect getting as many as eight Craig Bond films, and now it seems as though we'll be lucky to get four. I just wish we could have nice ( Read more... )

Q's independently-minded hair. More broadly, going young with Q was a great choice, and the part was well cast.

LOL yes! I need to pick up some Q icons, I think.

Actually, the chemistry between Craig’s Bond and everyone everywhere all the time. I think I’ve commented on this in the past - probably in the context of one of his earlier Bond forays - but Daniel Craig is one of those actors who is just a chemistry generator. It’s part of the reason why I still loved him as Bond even though I didn’t really love Casino Royale or QoS.

No one liked QoS. In its defense it was pretty much done without a script. But still.

I'm guessing most people saw the Moneypenny thing coming at some point. For me I think it was the first time they talked about the field not being for everyone.

Judi Dench's every expression and line delivery, because she is incredible and amazing.

Well, that just goes without saying. I'm going to miss her.

Bond sneaking up on the sex trafficking victim while she's naked in the shower. What an odd and tone deaf ( ... )

I’m surprised you haven’t already ;) How has your search for fic gone? I just know there are at least 10 stories out there that have Q making the trip to Macau instead of Eve, fear of flying be damned.

Ha! I think johnnybvo and my brother did. But yeah, they’re the only ones. I’d curse the writer’s strike, but then it did also give us Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog…. And in the writers defense, I didn’t care much for the direction either.

Ah, you had me beat then ;)

Me too! 17 years / 7 franchise films is a heck of run. I never would have expected it when she first showed up in Goldeneye. Whomever had that casting idea deserves a prize.

YES. Could not possibly agree more. She's a sex slave, clearly Bond should sleep with ( ... )

Ha! I finally found a couple icons. I actually never did start that fic search. I'm hoping I have minions who will find it for me. I've been talking to one of the Sherlock authors about a fic revolving around Sherlock and John seeing/not seeing it during the Reichenbach separation. Not sure if anything will come of it or not.

I totally agree. I had no idea she'd last so long. Do you think the death of Desmond Llewelyn had anything to do with their decision to replace her? I mean in the sense that they were already replacing upper management with new faces. Dame Dench looks like she's still going strong.

I really don’t know. I’d be interested to see it ( ... )

lol, alright. Well, I have only been dabbling in Skyfall fic myself, but I will certainly let you know if I come across anything. Mostly I'm seeing a *lot* of manips on Tumblr ;)

I originally thought her eyesight issues were behind it (she was diagnosed not long ago with some kind of eye disease that will purportedly cost her her vision in time, I think), but as you said, she's still going strong in terms of other projects. If I were being kind, I would say they figured they got a story-telling two-fer in killing the character off: you get to pile on to Bond's undercurrent of angst (further stripping away the only people who are important to him and highlighting his continued failure to protect those he's devoted to), and you ( ... )

That does not surprise me. You never did say if your Tumblr account has the same username.

But I honestly think they did it mostly for the shock value because they wanted to do something big to move past the pall of QoS.

I think you're probably right, unfortunately.

Sorry! I don't think I've received my LJ notification of that inquiry yet ;) My tumblr account is under the same username as my twitter (and a former LJ account), because I'm not very imaginative: pasunepomme

I think you're probably right, unfortunately.

I've been enjoying a handful of Mendes interviews here and there, and I have yet to see him address the question of why kill M headon, but I recently read where he said that the death of M was the only thing they kept from the treatment for Bond 23 by the original writer. I can't remember exactly what he said, but the implication was basically that they started with 'M dies in the end' and worked back from there in terms of developing the story that ultimately became Skyfall. So, that's something else I hope is addressed on a future commentary track ;)

I'd be interested in hearing about that, too!

But the Craig films have tried for more realism and real spies don't use a lot of gadgets in part because it's kind of hard to keep denying you're a spy when your captors find you carrying a bunch of gadgets.

But Bond also uses his real name routinely, so the Craig films can stuff their realism in that regard and give me gadgets! At the very least, some 24-esque Whatever Technology.

I had more problems with the gun. I'm thinking three lights, even small lights, would be a problem in the dark when you're trying not to be noticed.

And you’d be right! In Shanghai, you could totally see the lights on the gun through the frosted door when he’s tracking Patrice.

Huh. I thought from what I'd read that he'd finally relaxed into it but you seem to be more up on the Bond intel than I am. That's too bad, I'm enjoying his Bond, too.

I don’t know about being much more up on things; I’ve just read a couple of pieces over the last few days ;) I do think the positive and enthusiastic reception of Skyfall has encouraged/rejuvenated him a ( ... )

I know! I keep waiting for someone to just take out a gun and shoot him when he says that.

I would so take him as Bond for as long as he wants to. I thought the current EW had a good interview with him.

I'm reading From Russia, With Love and there's this bit where they're trying to figure out what the Russian State Security might be up to with a woman who has shown up in Istanbul saying she has secrets to impart but will only share them with James Bond. But they send Bond along because everyone's like, well, they can't want to kill him, because if they did, they'd just shoot him in the street outside his apartment, or plant a bomb in his car. And I'm sitting there going, wait, how does everyone just assume and is okay with the fact that the Russians know who their secret agents are and where they live?!? It's a bit silly :P

I thought the current EW had a good interview with him.

Oh, I missed that! I'll have to track it down.

It really is. How are you liking the original stories?

Not very much! They're uncomfortably misogynistic. I can stomach a certain amount of that stuff - I love old westerns and detective stories and other male-dominated forms of storytelling. But there's a particular darkness to the treatment of women in the original stories (well, the one and two-thirds I've read so far), that is not easily dismissed or reasoned away.

I was afraid of that. I have that issue with some older books and racism, too. Did you ever read Richard Matheson's I am Legend? The short story is totally awesome (none of the movies do it justice) but the rest of the short stories has all kinds of casual racism and misogyny.
