baseball mind dump

+ I feel really bad for Jeremy Guthrie - even when the guy throws a great game, he cannot catch a break when it comes to run support. At least Adam Jones kept us from getting no hit again. I'm so frustrated with the Orioles right now, which is a bad sign, because it means I have accidentally let my dumb ass get invested in them again. Clearly, six games at home in a month is too much for me if I'm going to maintain my devil-may-care attitude about the home team.

+ James Richard pitched in Oakland for the first time since May of last year, and won for the first time since his near-no hitter in August of last year. He did not shave, only went six, and was pulled 15 pitches short of his pitch count, but a pretty great return for him nonetheless, as he struck out six, walked none, and gave up just two earned. He should next pitch Thursday in Texas, since Melvin announced a six man rotation before the game, but I think there's a decent chance TPTB might huddle today and decide to pitch him Wednesday at home against Seattle on regular rest. Little thing called not fucking with the luck.

Short video of postgame comments from the Canadian, here.

+So far, this week has been good to the golden oldies, with Zito also making a triumphant return. Speaking of Zeets, the Giants are pitching him on three days rest today against Detroit, for the first time in his career. Looks like this is just gonna be a season full of firsts for Zito. Zito's game will be on MLBN, but we'll probably get Red Sox @ Astros here on the East Coast. Boo.

+ Mark Ellis was traded which I was surprisingly bummed about, but, got traded to a team I already follow (thank god - because otherwise he might have ended up another Danny Haren) and had a banner first night as a Rockie. I've seen more of Mark Ellis on national TV broadcasts in the 12 hours than I have in years. He's wearing No. 14, for the curious. Harold Reynolds was really surprised that Ellis was able to get that number, but HE'S MARK GODDAMN ELLIS AND IF ANYBODY WAS WEARING 14 DAMN RIGHT THEY GAVE IT UP.

I hope he's embraced by Rockies fans, and given that the Rockies beat reporter is already joking about retiring Ellis' Rockies jersey, I think he's off to a good start ;)

+ As a Rockie, Ellis is reunited with former teammate and fellow A's frat house alum Huston Street ♥. (And with Giambi and CarGo, but I don't care so much about that.) Via the Denver Post, Ellis during his Rockies presser: "I could give you a lot of dirt on Street[.]"

Which I'd laugh about, but I am too busy wishing he really would :P

+ Zook is now longest tenured A, in terms of consecutive years.

+ Oh, so Mark Mulder is on Twitter, everyone knows this, yes? (@markmulder20 - which...AW. Although I grew used to the sight of him as 30 in STL, it kinda does a weird thing to my heart to see him use 20 in his handle.) But yes, he's on "the twitter" as the grown folks call it, and he doesn't believe in consistent punctuation, so that's awesome (not really). It makes some of his tweets hard to understand, or maybe I am giving him too much credit, because frankly I'm not sure punctuation would make his tweets all that much more sensical / intelligible /responsive to the tweet that inspired it. (I made a passing comment about the fact that he was on BBTN earlier this week, given that I was under the impression he only did Friday/Sat shows, to which he responded "yea i do". Um, yeah you do what, Mark? Clearly he can't have meant he only does Friday/Sat shows because he was on BBTN on a Tuesday night AT THE TIME. It was the "if it hadn't been for that horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college" of tweets.)

There are a lot of parentheticals in that paragraph.

But anyway, back to Mark's tweeting. Tell me, what you make of this exchange:

The "Sort of." is:
A. CLEARLY A CHEAP SHOT AT RICH AND HIS HEALTH ISSUES THIS SEASON.
B. Probably a cheap shot at Rich.
C. Probably a shot at Rich, but not a cheap shot, because come on, James Richard is the baseball equivalent of a zombie.
D. Not a shot at Rich at all.

In response to being accused of taking a cheap shot at Rich, he replied/explained:

This:
A. Makes total sense.
B. Is horseshit.
C. Is horseshit, but he gets a pass because two tweets later he mentioned Chavvy first and foremost in the context of defensive players he most loved having on the field behind him, in addition to Scotty Rolen and Grudzie.

+ I'm pretty sick of Brian Wilson's whole schtick and that god damn beard, and yet there is no sign that either will be over soon.
